Wher can we get help from

ok dont know where to start really. My daughter and her Boyfriend have no money and have no way of getting any money until the end of this month, begining of february. They both work outside, my daughter gardening with her dad, and her boyfriend sprays Air Conditioning units. They are both full time in summer, but come september work slows down a bit , then by end of october this year they both have no work. no work, no money. They cant sign on the dole for 3/4 months, did not make enough money last year to save any. They just lived from day to day like most of us. My husband a I have been buying food for them for the past 3 months, but we too are now getting into debt. I just need to know where if anywhere they can get any money from to see them through to the middle of february when they will both be full time again. They owe 3 months rent money at the moment, goodness knows how much Gas and Electric, TV licence, Catalouges, their sky has been cut off, and their Phone has been cut off. My Daughter keeps saying she will have to try and get a loan, but i keep putting her off because i dont want her getting into any more debt. she is stressing out so much at the moment, not sleeping, loosing weight, with all this worry. Their Landlord is very understandable but obviously keeps asking for rent. My Husband cannot help them out with their bills ( we have our own), but we buy them food. They just do not know what to do............can anyone help please. thankyou Mandi:(

Have you googled your nearest foodbank. http://www.trusselltrust.org/foodbank-projects

Long term they are going to have to factor in not having work over winter by either saving some or finding winter work but I guess they know this already.

I'm sure someone with far more experience will be along soon!!

They could try applying for housing benefit to help pay the rent.

Why not? Would it not make sense to sign on looking for work?

Why cant they get other work in the lean times? What;s wrong with shelf stacking or factory work? At least it's something.

More to the point, what about tax credits etc? They shouldnt be completely skint in these times. They should also be working on a plan for living through those tough times.

  • There's no reason they can't sign on and then they will be able to claim Housing & Council Tax benefit too. Don't get into debt for them, in this country no-one will be left to starve if they go to the right organisations for help. Are they self-employed? If so, for now they need to give it up now and explain to the Jobcentre that self-employment has not worked out as they are not earning enough to sustain themselfs. They just need to be honest and say there is zero work in winter. If they are employed by a company they should be at least paid their contracted hours through the winter or ask for redundancy.

they are only in their teens, they didnt make enough money to save any. its the first job they have had. They cant sign on and get their rent paid for 3/4 months because they are classed as self-employed. their is nothing wrong with shelf stacking or factory work, but no employer is going to take you on for 3 months. they are completely skint, nothing, nada,no savings, they are in their teens. they have not had chance to get decent well paid jobs yet where they can put money away for the future.

Sounds like they need to find a second small job on top of their gardening/spraying jobs.
Night time shelf filling, waitress/bar work, cleaning/washing cars.

I would definitely seek some help with the job centre and also look into getting help with their rent. Sounds like they can`t really afford to have their own place just yet so may be worth them looking into either a house share or bedsit until they can afford it.

A loan is certainly not the answer, nor is it ideal to be helped out by yourself if your now getting into debt :(

Please dont take this the wrong way but you seem to be making excuses for them. Only teenages? I was 14 when my mother walked out and left me and my (then 61 year old) father destitute. He was about as useful at housekeeping as a chocolate teapot so I set to work. At 16, he had a stroke, I'd been running the house for the best part of 2 years and keeping us afloat, best I could. I left college and went to work because I was told by the DSS that because I had never worked, I wasnt entitled to any 'help' even though there was literally nothing in the house to eat and no money to buy it with. I worked any job, anywhere, any length of time. I did days, nights, weekends, bank holidays and sometimes days and nights back to back to make any money at all, I'm not kidding. I literally came off a night shift at 6am, came home, had a shower and went onto a day shift somewhere else. I did that for quite a while. I was young and I could do it and it was necessary for survival.

I wasnt concerned with gadgets, or sky or anything that wasnt directly helping to feed us.

That's what they should be doing. Either they are adults, or they arnt. Time to step up and grow up I'm afraid. Life is sometimes hard and unfair, but no one owes them a living and no one is going to hand them a job. They have to go and bang on doors and god forbid, beg for a chance at a job. That;s the way life is and time they learned.

easier said than done im afraid. they have both been looking for 2nd jobs for a few months now. they cant get any.....being truthful no-one will take them on for 3 months. they have had their own place for a year without any problems, my daughter is very good with money and counts every penny.....makes a shopping list and sticks to it lol. it only went boobs up when they both had to stop work. if her boyfriend was still working through winter they would not be in this mess right now. But unfortunately the person he works for (a small company) couldnt find work for him even on the factory floor. their are only 5 people in that business and he was the last one their ( so obviously he will be the last one to get his job back). You cant mess about with jobs in this day and age............if you have one, you do whatever you can to keep it.
They have been to the job centre and when they said that they need help for 3 months, the woman nearly fell off her chair laughing. , and basically said we are not a charity and you cant just sign on for 3 months.
