Downstairs bathroom lease

Hi,
I'm starting to look for a new property to rent and alredy I've seen quite a few. In the area that I'm considering, a number of houses have downstairs bathrooms (including lavatories) because they were built at the turn of the century. I've seen quite a few where there is only a dividing door between the bathroom and the kitchen. There is no real gap.
Is it still legal to let out properties like this? Or does the landlord/letting agent need to remedy this situation? I'm sure I read somewhere that this was illegal.

They used to think that smells spread germs and it turns out that they don't. Hence, it's fine to have a bathroom off the kitchen.
I also don't think it was 'illegal', it just wouldn't have conformed to building regs at one point in time and even that would only have been enforcable if it had been built during that period.
It's also very normal to have downstairs bathrooms in properties built before bathrooms were invented.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
