Is there such a thing as a wi-fi aerial that I can connect to my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6400) in order that I can connect to my brothers wi-fi that is just tantilisingly out of reach?

  • Its better to increase the signal strength from the router with a better aerial.
We've sold Aerials that screw on to the router inplace of its own and increase the range and signal strength for around £15-20

I had the same problem and I got around it by creating a wireless bridge between two routers. This not only boosts the signal in my house, but it means with one router in my room - I can plug in (with a cable) - my two desktop pcs, so they don't need separate wireless receivers.
Only works with select models of routers though, and you seem to need two identical.

You can also buy range extender type devices, that you put somewhere there is signal, which picks up the original signal and boosts it a little bit (pretty much the same as what I have, but easier to set up). In practice, I've never seen these work fantastically well though.

I can't point you to it, but I have seen at least one advertisement for a kind of parabolic reflector to affix behind the router aerial to 'beam' a longer range signal in the direction you need it.

    Buffalo AirStations.
You get the two, put in the mac address of each, into the other.. then flick a switch for bridge mode on one.
The one that isn't running in bridge mode needs to be cabled into something - mine plugs into my cable modem. This would be a slightly different if you're using ADSL instead.

Two of these is what I'm using -> http://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-WHR-G54S-1-125Mbps-Wireless-Broadband/dp/B000BYR4PY

I emailed: helpdesk@buffalo-technology.ie before I bought them, to tell them what I was doing and ask if it would work. They gave me a reply in 1-2 days.
