help needed for low fat diet PLEASE

Options
Hi

i don't know how to start this only to say due to medical and weight problems the doctor has put me on tablets to help me loose weight. i have got to eat foods that are 5g or less per 100g total fat and not high in sugar. if i do stray i will have terrible toilet problems which of course i don't want!!!

has anybody got any recipe ideas and can you use just egg white to coat foods with breadcrumbs after the flour? have used whole egg so am hoping the whites will do the same job.

please do not judge me all i want is diet advice PLEASE

thanks mary

    Hi Mary

Sorry to hear of your medical problems. You will not be judged here. The OS board isn't that kind of board.

I'm diabetic and I was told that my diet should be low-sugar, low-fat, low-salt. Everyone should be eating a diabetic diet apparently!

Do you cook from scratch most of the time? If so, try and cook using as little oil, fat and butter as possible. Stir-frying, grilling, oven-baking, barbecuing are all good ways of cooking without using much in the way of oil or fat. Use herbs and spices instead of salt. Use fruit instead of sugar, where possible. Incorporate vegetables as much as you can into your recipes - that way you can reduce the meat content and thereby the fat content. Its also cheaper and better for you. Use brown rice, wholemeal bread and wholewheat pasta too. These have far more fibre than their white counterparts.

Do you have a slow cooker? There are recipes on the Mega Index Thread for all sorts of recipes including slow cooker recipes.

You could also search the web using "low fat" or "diabetic" as search words.

I hope this doesn't come across as a preachy post, Mary. I had to discover all of the above myself but now it has become second nature to cook this way and I have to say that DS, DD and I are all healthier for it.

Good luck on your weight loss. You won't forget to keep us posted, will you?

    Hi

Hopefuly I can help too- OH was put onto tablets for high cholestrol, so pretrty much anything containing fat ., including eggs, was out.

LUckily hes much better now, so we can eat more normally agian, but many of the old recipes have "stuck" adn certainly leaner ways of cooking too.

All the usual mince recipes will remain the same, but try soya mince ( i use the dry one from hoolland & barrett) or quorn mince.

Use turkey too, its a very lean meat, and you can get it in micned form ( good for the spag bols chilli etc) and making burger on ( if you have george forman style grill all the better we use a griddle pan)

We used turkey in stir frys with stacks of veg ( he was meant to have 7 portions a day- we usually just abourt managed 6 LOL)

Do get hold of a weightwatchers 123 book weve got one ( courtesy of mother who thought I was getting too porky- thanks mum!) but theres some cracking recipes in there - and they are all cheap too!
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...

I'm on a low fat diet I use a spray if I need oil just bought an empty bottle and filled it
my diet is mainly white meat /fish
salad and veg I do eat potatoes occasionaly but not a lover of them I only have fully skimmed milk bread rolls ect are home made so I control how much fat goes in (I tend to use half what the recipie say's )
but as Annie said look thrugh the recipie index it's a wealth of good ideas
good luck keep us posted and don't forget no question is a silly question

My dd can't eat eggs, so I use plain yogurt to make crumbs stick. I've also had success with just dipping the food (chicken in this case) in water then crumbs. I didn't bother with the flour ;)

Can I recommend a cookery writer to you ? Sue Kreitzman. She has written many low-fat cookery books in which she virtually eliminates all fat from the recipes. Her food is really exciting, full of big flavours. She writes with enthusiasm. I lost a lot of weight years ago following her ideas - in fact I really don't know why I don't get her books out again as I could certainly do with it

Unfortunately many of her books are out of print, although that may be a good thing as there are plenty of second hand copies around on Amazon. The Slim Cuisine ones are particularly good.

  • Hi Mary

I think I know which ones you mean ;)

Its very tempting when you're on them to go very low fat to avoid the well known rather icky side effects. The problem of cutting too much fat out of your diet is that that tablets have nothing to work on (they work by bypassing 1/3 of the fat you take in).

If the fat you take in is sooooo low then that drop of 1/3 won't be enough to make that much of a difference.

Its very much triel and error, get it wrong and you'll know about it. Just try and be sensible and eat fairly low fat, but you need to make sure you're not cutting out all your fat.

    Lots of Luck!

    C :)

A little tip (one which I discovered courtesy of my wonderfully resourceful mother but which I have since discovered is also endorsed by none other than Rosemary Conley!): in your recipes, especially things like soups and casseroles, or where you would have used a lot of butter, try using fresh ground black pepper. Added generously to most dishes, this seems to replace so much of the flavour that can be lost when you are cooking with minimal fat. I've found it a really good way of making wholesome food that tastes nice.
