rosemary conleys hip & thigh diet book has some good recipes in as well, I used to live on her mushroom stroganoff when I was at uni cos it was so cheap, and really lovely flavours, I had it with brown rice. this book youll be able to pick up for pence in bootsales charity shops etc. Might make myself some of that later mmmm
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

I went on these tablets a few years ago but the effects i had were quite extreme and i only lasted a month on them. I found that a few things like tomato puree and some soups could cause an upset.

Once we were out an about and we had sandwiches from a supermarket for lunch, i picked the low fat ones but it contained lowfat mayo. That evening was awful!

Just thought i would share my experiance with you and hope that they work for you.

  • I endorse what's already been said about getting a Rosemary Conley recipe book from a charity shop. All her meals are under 5% fat, though sometimes the ingredients are a bit posh! :)

I'm also dieting on a budget. I bought a calorie guide book for 49p from a charity shop and use that to work out the calories in everything I eat, aiming for a daily total of 1200. I've found that helps - have lost 7 lbs in my first 10 days, and spent £80 total on groceries for two people for one month. I'm delighted on both counts!

I've previously lost weight with Weight Watchers (even modelled for an ad for them once!) and found them very good IF you get an inspiring meeting leader. At £5 a week it's not cheap, but can be good for support and willpower-building.

    Hope that's helpful.

You may want to look into the GI Diet, which i'm following at the moment. This is lots of unprocessed food, low sugar, low fat diet, which is remarkably easy to follow (just red light, yellow light or green light food). The recipes in the books are quite expensive (Garlic prawn pasta, for example, if you follow the recipe probably costs around £3 to £5!) but i amend the recipes by adding more veg (which you're allowed to do) - just check whether the item you want to add is red, yellow or green light. You don't have to follow their recipes, you can just amend your normal cooking to suit the rules.

For example: spag bol is allowed on the diet, just put in more veg than you would normally, use green lentils to reduce the amount of beef you use (and use ultra lean minced beef), and reduce the amount of pasta you have - i.e. lots of sauce, and relatively little pasta, and very little (if any at all) cheese (if you must have, use parmesan, which is strongly flavoured so you need a lot less of it).

Its one we're following at the moment and we're both really enjoying it, don't know if we've lost any weight yet as we only started on wednesday, but we're not going hungry and although the food cost a little more than i would normally have spent, a lot of that went in start up costs.

    HI

I took xenical once as I'm about 15st and 5'7 - I have irritable bowel syndrome and it absolutely crippled me

I can't really give you much advice as I'm still fat - I go on diets for a few weeks lose a stone then lose my resolve and put it all back on again

My best friend though has joined slimming world, she was over 18st and in the first month she lost 12lb which I think is brilliant.

I know its a big step but if you want to lose the weight you could join too - it would be good for you to have mutual support from people in the same situation

    Best of luck

Good luck in your endeavours! I'd LOVE to lose weight, did lose 6 stone about 4 years ago and then replaced it all. My problem is that even low fat dairy products and citrus give me really bad sinusitis - last week I tried having cereal for breakfast and paying the price this week. Even my eyes oozed stuff! The last two days I've had Sainsbury's lovely lovely museli (no currants or sultanas) dry with some fruit and nuts added.

I think low GI is the way to go but am adapting it to suit my health and my taste. Can't eat fish of any description as it makes me vomit, can't take too many yoghurts and too much fruit makes my tongue sore!

In addition I'm trying to avoid wheat so am really enjoying pumpernickel bread and oatcakes.

Sometimes life is so difficult - thank god for wine!!

Good luck - I changed to a low fat diet and cut my cholesterol by 10%. I cut out the CH foods - CHips, CHeese and CHocolate (although I had some chox at Christmas and Easter!). Cutting down the fat certainly has helped my sinus problem too.
Hope all goes well for you.

This is a weird one, I'm quite overweight as already mentioned but I hadmy cholestoral checked 6 months ago and it was only 4.7 - I REALLY did not understand that one so put it down to a spoof result!

  • Good luck with the tablets. I was given that option but decided not to go ahead (heartburn is negative reinforcement enough and that hasn't stopped me eating the wrong things).

I'm doing as much as I can. Had a local slimming world group for a couple of months which helped but then I moved. Am just trying to eat low GI and learn to cook for when my diabetic Mum visits from Australia at Christmas. She sent me a load of Australian healthy cookbooks (Cooking with Conscience and the Symply series) and taught me that when shopping, to look at the nutrition guidelines on the back of the pack. Most products give you a breakdown per 100g and you look for less than 3.5g of fat (per 100g) and under 10g sugar (per 100g). That way your diet should end up less than 35% fat and less than 10% sugar. It's worth checking as fat levels can vary even in the same brand of pasta sauce for example.

Am surprised that you've been advised to give up whole egg - it's a bit like milk. Very healthy and with a relatively low amount of fat. Traditionally the concern was with cholesterol. At one stage Tescos had started to put the equivalent of the american product "egg beaters" into their fridges. These are liquid egg substitutes where the ratio of whole egg to egg white is about one to three so the fat content is reduced. Sorry, I can't remember what they were called.
If you think reality makes sense, you're just not paying attention!
