I have been in the same boat but I stupidly thought it was an overdraft fee!! Yes I have been niave and have written a letter to my branch about 3 weeks ago and I haven't heard anything back at all. I have been paying the charge for 3 1/2 years and by the looks of things I'm not going to get anything back at all. I'm really annoyed now!!! x

Contact their Complaints department - not your branch.
These days most mail addressed to manager is passed on to a central place to action.

    Hi ejones999

I beleive you work for a bank and wondered if you have any tips on what things I could do to meet the criteria to be offered a Gold current account from LTSB? I noticed on a screen I saw a member of staff pull up the other day all of the months of the year listed and amounts beside them for march and april with mine being just under £1000 (looks like the total that was paid in), if I keep on at this level will that help. I also noticed another screen but could not see it properly that said "high", it was on the bottom left hand side and the word high was in bolder typeface and had it written again under it. I currently live in an area with a postcode that would be considered very high risk, so wondered if that was what it was, geodemographic data.

I am on the electoral roll, have 5 active credit accounts and have never missed a payment in my life, but this is my first current account in a long time as I have been on benefit and was getting it before as giro, then into a post office card account.

Do you know how many months after you open the account the computer starts offering you things like a gold acc, credit card etc, if you score high enough. I know someone who has had an account for years and nothihg, even having a high salary paid in, but another who lives in a very prosperous area, has less paid in but got offers after a few months.

I have just gone into my branch and lodged a formal complaint they said i'll be hearing from them next week.. They have been charging me for years for this rubbish and i nearly gave up because they made it seem like it was my fault for not noticing (thinking it was naively and overdraft fee!).. If I get a simialar response back i will keep fighting.. i didnt sign for it so I shouldnt have to pay for it.. END OF. lets hope it works and your post has given me back my fighting spirit

natwest did this to me - "they upgraded" a dormant account that had not been used for seven years to one which had a fee attached. As the account was empty and had no o/d facility the charges were taken, then the unauthorised overdraft fees - and as the account was dormant - I had no statements for months. It took a long time to get this sorted, many letters and phone calls. The worst thing was I'd gone in to shut the account and that was when they upgraded it. I got everything refunded and closed eventually, but they also made me feel like it was my fault for not checking. I will not ever even entertain the thought of banking with these people again.

I asked them to provide me with the bit of paper I'd signed to authorise the change. That worked and everything was refunded because they could not prove to me they had permission to take the cash.

I ended up with a direct line to the branch manager, and everytime they took another payemnt, I just phoned him and lost my temper.

Best of luck OP and don't let them tell you it is your fault - it isn't, they took from your account without asking you. cel x

    Good news!!!
I had a hone call from Barclays this morning (bareing in mind I only lodged the complaint in my branch on Sat!) they have calculated all my charges (£340) and apologised for not consulting me on the upgrade (i knew I hadn't signed anything!) and said the money will be completely refunded, the money will be in my account today!!
Wow I am shocked how little time it took, I guess they didnt have a leg to stand on.
I just wanted to thank all u guys for the support and advice. I will never be as stupid again thats for sure!!
    Thanks again x
