DLA Question Help Needed Please!

Hi,

My sister has just started full time work but she is hard of hearing and has to wear a hearing aid, this has been the case since she had an ear infection aged 4 which led to the impairment.

Would she be entitiled to DLA or an extra financial help at all apart from working tax credits which she has sent off a claim for?

I have no idea about DLA so I hope I don't sound stupied!

Thanks in advance.

  • Not DLA - this is purely for Mobility and care needs. And is also very hard to get. But there might be some help from adult social care as they sometime offer help for people with hearing impairment. I know mine certainly offers it.

I'd say it'd be tough to qualify... ultimately entitlement is determined by showing you meet the criteria regarding care or mobility needs and is not as such awarded because of the condition. I just quickly found this document on google search that may prove initially useful in determining if there is any merit in a claim in this case. http://www.sense.org.uk/content/disability-living-allowance-and-deafblindness

She may be entitled to a free bus pass.

Indeed, the free Bus Pass for hearing aid users is a really useful perk. It's discretionary, so not all Councils provide them, but most do.

In addition, there's a Railcard available to all hearing aid users, which gives 30% off rail fares for the individual, plus 30% off for one other person travelling with them. Apply at any Rail Station or online. Now that can produce really big savings.
