Pay as you drive car insurance

Options
My 24yr old son has just insured his car (2 years no claims) with Norwich Union (pay as you drive). His annual mileage is around 2000 miles which is very low compared to the national average. He has paid a deposit of £120 which includes the fitting of the Telematic Device which transmits the distance travelled and on what roads via satelite. He pays £13 premium per month + mileage costs which should equate to approximately £10 per month. The total cost of his insurance will be approximately £396 for the year. This includes comprehensive cover, courtesy car, personal accident & legal costs. His original premium was £645 and was only third party fire & theft. My son contacted Norwich Union to put me on his insurance and was pleased to be given a further £72 reduction on his premium which equates to a reduction of £6 per month, his original monthly premium being £19. He also qualified for a £25 Marks & Spencers voucher for renewing his policy at least 14 days before his renewal date.
Conclusion:
Original annual renewal premium £645 Third party, Fire & Theft.
Pay as you Drive annual premium £396 Comprehensive cover.

Steve, I too have been on PAYD for a couple of months now and it's really going to save my wife and I lots of dosh. Last year I paid £175 premium. I was on the original pilot test for the PAYD trial and due to a !!!!-up their end they forgot to transfer me when it went "live" I complained and they were very apologetic and as a result, I didn't have to pay for the installation of the Telematics box. We only drive about 400-5000 miles per year and my bill for last month in which I drove just over 413 miles was under £7! We do a few long distance trips over the year but I still think we will save money in the long run (no pun intended)!

beware that you are being spied on wherever you go, and in the event of an accident or anything they have data on you which they have and will continue to disclose to the police.

I'd rather pay the extra cash and be able to drive when I want and not get spied on by Big Brother.

You are being spied on wherever you go thesedays so it's no big deal. Alsom, have you thought of the other side of the coin? If your car is stolen, the tracker device can tell the police where your car is. Anyway, if there is an accident which is either your fault or not, the evidence is there, and there is no doubt of the circumstances. After all, I wouldn't want t submit a false claim, would I? And as for driving when I want to, well, I do!!

Can anyone tell me how big the tracker device actually is? I'm thinking about going onto PAYD as I only use my car for about 5000 miles a year, but my car's speedometer is situated in the middle of the dashboard not in eyeline though the steering wheel, I don't want the tracker device to be in my way, and wonder where it can be put, also does anyone actually use the satnav on it?

The actual box is about the same size as a CD case and it is hidden away usually in the centre console. You cannot see it. Yse, I have subscribed to the Sat Nav and Safe Speed. They are both excellent, and friends of mine who have different sat navs say mine is superior because you do not have to take your eyes off the road, just listen to the instructions.
