I'm talking about the effort you put in whilst watching tv/films/playing games. You can put in more effort (thus burning more calories) when you're not trying to listen to what the actors are trying to say/follow a plot etc.
This is very true and a good point, certainly if you're dong timed work or HIIT then music is great for motivation and keeps you focused on the task in hand.
Personally in the evening I'm a big fan of low intensity "steady state" cardio where I just plod away on autopilot. If there are no kids about and you can concentrate then HIIT (high intensity interval training) is highly thought of. Plenty of info on this online but basically go as fast as you can for 30 seconds (or whatever you can manage) the drop back to a comfortable pace for a while and repeat. Iirc people believe this helps speed your metabolism better/longer than low intensity with less chance of the muscle wastage associated with running long distances.
