Treadmill Advice?

I've never been into using treadmills in gyms or exercise bikes for one reason.........heat.
When you are on them indoors you heat up very quickly and begin to sweat much sooner than you will outdoors with fresh air around you.
The heat and sweat will make you feel like you are working hard and achieving a good work out. Not so. If you were outside you'd probably not even break into a sweat and would keep going longer.
Also, it makes sense to walk somewhere for a reason rather than just for the sake of it. Such as going to a shop to buy something. Give yourself a reason to do something and you are more likely to do it.
Treadmills are great places to hang wet washing from to dry, and that will probably be it's main use in a year if you get one.
Best of luck with your choice and keep moving, however you do it.0 -
I agree with getting outside and walking/jogging wherever possible, treadmills are expensive and big and easily become expensive clothes airers.
I know that sometimes it's not possible to get out and do so - I have a second hand reebok 2000 cross trainer that I bought years ago. It's an awesome bit of kit, low impact and easier to store and move than a treadmill - plus after walking a lot in the day it makes a great pain free change in the evening when I'm unable to get out. Easily found in free ads for under 50 quid (although probably harder to find in January when new years resolutions are rife.) Ours has done hundreds of miles since purchase and is as smooth as the day I got it home. It costs very little to run (a few C batteries which last forever) and after duct taping some cardboard as a mouse mat is great to use whilst computing.
When not in use it does also make a great clothes drier especially for large stuff like bedding!0 -
I agree with other Posters about how much better is a walk out in the fresh air, reliable pedometer on hand, to really get to know outdoors with all it's variety, weather etc. Indeed I would argue that it is essential to health, provided we can tear ourselves away from the insulting mesmerising that is mostly tv and onto something non electric.
However I also think we need to emmulate an rather plucky pensioner who had an exercise bike and who did a healthy no of miles on the bike.
I think it's honest to get a treadmill - I would do the same one to my quality and satisfaction at bargain price and with pedometer on self to the tv etc walk away the miles.
I don't think it is either/or so much as both and.
Long distance ramblers is probably more healthier model than the governments five mile a day challenge IMHO.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

I have a stepper here, plus a broken mini cycle which needs repair. I now have a lazy persons pedometer which does all the measuring for me and it has inspired me no end.
Perhaps I am an cyborg and need electronic encouragement to get fat lardy !!!!!! off sofa and into that fresh air I talk about and onto my stepper curried buried under pile of un thrown away boxes.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Don't forget you're likely to not work as hard if you're using exercise equipment in front of the tv/computer. If you really want to exercise indoors switch the tv off and put some music on instead. The TV/computer will just slow you down.My mind not only wanders .......... sometimes it leaves completely0

Gotta say I disagree with this, with a film on one monitor and a good game of texas holdem on the other I can easily burn hundreds of calories without even noticing that I'm doing so. In my experience it make the time fly by!
I do enjoy music while weight training, but for me cardio is rather boring on it's own.0 -
The Right background helps.
I once did an exhausting 45 mins on the stepper whilst watching STV News on Youtube facing my Desktop.
Whatever helps.
The nature thing is the thing if you are going walkies so maybe that's an example of less distraction.
TV for me is an unproductive vehicle unless otherwise.#TY[/B] Would be Qaulity MSE Challenge Queen.

Hi All,
Thanks for the replys. I had thought about a treadmill as I fractured my T12 a while ago and any exercise other than gentle walking or swimming is out of the question. I work 4 jobs at the minute and am a single mum of 3 so not much spare time to get out and about in the day and cant leave the kids in the evenings.0 -
I have a kettler treadmill from Very in my living room (gets some funny looks when people visit
)it takes weight up to 120kg highly recommend it too, use it when watching tv, listening to music, etc and the time flies by.
I don't have time to get out and about with 4 children and it really encourages me to shift my butt!

I'm talking about the effort you put in whilst watching tv/films/playing games. You can put in more effort (thus burning more calories) when you're not trying to listen to what the actors are trying to say/follow a plot etc.My mind not only wanders .......... sometimes it leaves completely0
