Your op said "any and all advice welcome"
You have been given sound advice.
Seems you never really wanted advice at all - just a long rant over being charged for cancelling your policy!0

Some people believe they shouldnt be charged but that is a myth spread by people that are mixing things up with the distance selling regs which do not apply to insurance.
I believe I shouldn't be charged as there is no justification for such a fee when the whole process had not even really begun. Regardless of the fact that particular regulation doesn't cover me, it isn't a "fair" fee in this instance.
To be honest... if you think about it in another way, this whole thing just means that I will (obviously) never use this particular insurance company. Had they conducted themselves in a considerate and decent manner I would probably have been MORE likely to use them, not just would have considered them in future I would have actually probably paid more to use them thinking that customer service these days is worth the extra.0

I believe I shouldn't be charged because no fee has been incurred to the organisation.
Why do you think that?If there was (somehow) some fee it would be minimal - not ~£50.
On what basis do you make the decision that their business model is such that £50 is unacceptable?I do not believe I should be charged because it is not fair and it is not just. No wonder this site has lost the tag "consumer revenge" from its banner.
A charge is fair and is just because costs have been incurred. If you dont pay those costs for your work created then they get passed on to others (which is the old way when charges were less explicit or more implicit). Why should others pay for you?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0

Sometimes you just have to accept mistakes and move on from them. It happens but it won't happen again will it??0

£45 - £60 to the comparison site that you used to find their quote.
IT systems to deliver the quote, allow you to purchase and process your payment.
Phone system that you dialled in to when cancelling.
Person that you spoke to when cancelling.
Building to house that person, chair, desk, screen etc etc
Person employed to monitor social media sites and respond to daft complaints.......All matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves.0

:TI have just had this problem with Swiftcover. GOOD NEWS. The charge was refunded. Here's the correspondence below:
 To whom it may concern,
I took out Swift cover policy number xxxxx online on xxxth February 2013.
I have today called to cancel this policy.
I have been advised that I can only expect a refund of £164.96 instead of the full £189.96 I paid as there is a £25 administration charge in order to cancel the policy.
I believe this is an unreasonable charge for the administration involved and breaches the terms of The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000.
Please confirm you will be providing a full refund.
 Yours Faithfully
 To whom it may concern,
Correction to my email below, your administration charge does not breach The Consumer Protection (Distance Selling) Regulations 2000. However, I believe the charge does breach the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulations 1999 (UTCCR) and the statements on unfair contract terms made by the Financial Services Authority (FSA) in its publication 'Challenging unfair terms in consumer contracts' (available on the FSA website). It also breaches the Insurance Conduct of Business rules
Please confirm you will be providing a full refund within the next 7 days.
 Yours faithfully
 Dear xxxxxx
