I'll actually answer your question instead of abusing you.

If its a fixed camera, signs are required. I don't think its the case for mobile units.

There are no requirements the Police have to follow to gather the evidence they need to prosecute, its all urban myth.

Utter rubbish. I think you'll find there are standards and procedures and evidence is required.

Could you point me in the right direction on the DoT website/literature where this information is published please or provide a reference so I can go and find it? It would be really useful to have it to hand should I ever need to use it in a court of law.
    Many thanks

THIS link may be helpful, it isnt from the DoT website but may be of use/information

unfortunately that link isn't valid...oh not to worry, I have managed to view source and pull the web address from that...So onto the link!

Hmm, unfirtunatey, as noted it's not a DoT website...it's unlikely that anything there actually reflects the law unless it serves the purpose of the site. As The website does NOT give an objective view on speed cameras. It is a propaganda site against their use. The information it is giving about 10% +2mph is an association of chief police officers guideline and NOT law and is talking about camera placement and not how fast you can speed without getting prosecuted. The law is the speed limit. Any allowance offered by the police if you are caught speeding is discretionary. Oh and some of the supporting information is American...I'm still really interested to be proved wrong by a copy of the actual legislation about this.

The bottom line is this: don't speed and if you do and get caught, don't try and weasle out of the points and fine. And as for saying it's fine to break the law on an open road by speeding...is it also OK if I come and steal your 32" plasma screen TV from your unlocked house on a quiet afternoon? Just a thought

Thanks, have amended the link to work now.

Different police forces have different guidelines/procedures, but the bottom line is if you go over the speed limit and get caught - tough, pay up and get the points!

The Legal allowance for varying calibration of speedos is 10% + 2mph.
    So 35 in a 30, 46 in a 40, 57 in a 50 an so forth.

You do have variance in speedo readings and your actual speed. You will always be travelling slightly slower than your indicated speed.

The ACPO guidelines are suggested thresholds for fixed penalties and summons. These values are not law, but exactly as the name suggests. Most forces follow these recommendations.

You could be prosecuted for driving at 31mph in a 30mph limit, but it would make this type of traffic enforcement (even more) unpopular, so that's one of the reasons the guidelines are drawn up.
