The Rocco Forte Amigo is a lovely hotel, one of my favourites.

I also have just come back from Antwerp (this is the centre for the diamond trade in Europe). It was lovely there - I wish I had more time to spend there. I stayed at the Park Plaza, opposite Centraal Station. Antwerp Berchem Station is half an hour from Brussels - an easy train ride via Eurostar, or direct flight from London City Airport.

My hubby bought my ring that he had made and before we went to Chester for the weekend he put the ring in a bag and in the airing cupboard and did it infront of me.... or so i thought.

He actually put an inkjet cartridge in the bag (similar size) and then in a nice Italian restaurant he proposed by Marry Me spelt out in candy letters on my plate with the dessert :p:D and of course the ring !

Good Luck Ringo_24601 you sound a nice fella (esp the 5k on a a diamond bit ;) )

Don't know if this helps, but I was proposed to only 2 months ago. We had just come back (the night before) from a hol at the Isle of Wight visiting my family. That morning my OH was acting strange but I thought nothing of it (cos he has silly moments sometimes) he literally proposed to me in bed that morning, which completely caught me off guard and I wasn't expecting, and told me we were getting on a flight to Edinburgh to stay at thois absolutly gorgeous hotel (a castle thing in Dalmahoy-think thats how you spell it) We spent three lovely days there, I was pampered and got treated to some of the best food I have ever had. If he had held off proposing to me to when we were there, I would have known what he was planning on proposing.

We had always talked about getting married from the begining of our relationship, and I always thought I would guess when he was going to do it, but I had no idea. Also this way we could both enjoy our trip together, rather than worrying about things that could go wrong.

Hope this helps and good luck!!
    :rudolf: I love xmas!
  • Melissa - can you recommend a suitable restaurant?

I must remember to go through Quidco for all this!
  • Well, I've decided she knows its going to happen in the next few months. I was asked if my parents should be invited to her brother's wedding (in august). Now, if I propose, they become part of his mishpocha (yiddish word - Extended family) and would typically get invited to family events. So.. by saying they should be invited, I basically told her that I plan to propose.

Doh, no way out of that corner unfortunatly

I got proposed to by my other half saying he'd left a "present" in my bedroom for me.

He'd fake proposed so many times I didn't really believe him. I knew he'd bought the ring but he kept at various points saying "I love you with all my heart, you mean so much to me, will you... get me a beer from the fridge?" I even got a text "You're the best thing that ever happened, I never knew when we first met that our relationship would grow into something this strong and incredible. Baby I always said I'd never propose in a text. THat hasn't changed, I just like teasing you!"

Anyway I run up to my room, and there's a box on my bed. I dive onto the bed and opened the box, inside was a gorgeous wooden ring box. I opened it, and it was empty!

I turned around to find my OH had followed me up the stairs, and he was on one knee holding the ring in his hand and he proposed.

So yeah, no cost whatsoever but memorable.

If she's going to suss you, maybe calling her bluff a lot like this will help?

My dream proposal would be somewhere romantic, quiet and intimate, outside at sunset with tons of candles (and champagne on ice) - goodness knows how you'd arrange that! Maybe get a mate to set it up for you while you take her out for the day?

Could you tell her that you have won an overnight stay at a hotel so she wont be suspicious? I'm with Sharra - I would love the mountain or beach at sunset etc. Recently my hubby took me away for a night for my birthday which was lovely, but the best bit was when he organised for us to walk up MamTor (in Derbyshire) to watch the sunset with a bottle of champers and some snacks. He knows I'm a sucker for a decent sunset. You could put the ring in a box of choccies under her fave one. I am so envious as in spite of being married twice, I have never received a proper proposal!! 1st time, we seemed to drift into it and 2nd time it was "assumed" that we would get married. We had "problems" a few years ago and whilst I wouldnt want a full scale renewal of vows type thing, I'd love him to do something mind blowingly romantic to make up for the error of his ways!!! I hope your girlfirend knows she's lucky to have you. xx
  • If the mountain had a nice footpath up it, she might go for it, otherwise she's not a very outdoorsy girl. I have started planting the idea in her head of a couple of nights away using my airmiles (I've got just enough for flights to europe). So.. using this pretense is my best way of getting away without her twigging too early

Still not picked a location yet (ideally beach, warm in 3 weeks, good hotels).. I've got a few ideas.. amsterdam, vienna, lake garda (italy), nice .. but nothing for certain.
