3DS XL Help....

Hi, not sure if this is in the right place or not, apologies if not, but we are needing some help with our boys 3DS XL's they got for Christmas. I believe that we may be able to link them up so they can play against each other, is this right? and if so what do I need to do to sort it out? do we need two of the same game?

I am absolutely rubbish at anything like this but would love to try and sort this so that these expensive consoles are being used to their potential.

Any tips/advice would be greatly received.
