iPod Help Please

Greetings all and a Happy New Year.

I have decided to finally upgrade my ancient Apple iPod with the latest iPod Touch 64Gb (note, I'm talking about an ipOd not ipad) and it should be here in a couple of days).

I have already used Windows Media Player on my Windows 7 laptop to rip my CD collection to .mp3 files (highest quality selected at rip time) and these are sitting in two folders, one for Pop and one for Classical ... some 32Gb in all. Each album occupies a separate sub folder which includes album artwork automatically retrieved on-line during the ripping process.

 My question is, will I simply be able to drag and drop these .mp3 folders onto the new iPod or do I have to download the dreaded iTunes software and create a library in that first for the iPod to sync to, presumably duplicating all my 32Gb of music onto the laptop in the process?

Any helpful advice much appreciated.

The textbook way would be to leave your mp3s in their current folders, and use iTunes.

With iTunes open, select the 'Add Folder to Library' option, and select your folders. This adds links to the mp3s from the iTunes library without actually moving your files. It doesn't duplicate them.

The only downside to this is that you can't move any of the files to another location, or change the folder structure, or iTunes will lose track of where the files are. They all need to be in the same place as they were when you added the folder, every time you Sync the iPod to iTunes, or else they won't transfer to the iPod

Many thanks for that googler. I'll make sure my folder structure is exactly as I want to permanently keep it then before I perform the 'Add folder to library'. Good to hear that the data isn't duplicated. Regards.

Yes, good point. I am resigned to downloading the latest version of iTunes now. Just hope my poor laptop can withstand the shock! :)
