Iceland used to do online ordering, you got a CD-ROM you had to load but the experiment didn't last long. Iceland already had vans so I'm mystified for a reason why it wasn't a success. I used it until they stopped the service - haven't used Iceland regularly since.

  • I go to Iceland for just one thing - their frozen smoked haddock! Bags of 4 nice sized pieces without bones (and quite often 5 pieces when on a special offer) I think it's lovely and the nicest frozen smoked haddock I have found. I once bought a bag from Farmfoods and threw it all away - a really horrible false smoked flavour.

They were the market leaders in online shopping, then tesco copied and poached a few shoppers.

Logistically was problem as every store did it. some store small some large, small dident always have range or availiability so lots substitutions, it was time comsuming but customers loved it as not only could they do online but old people used to phone their order through to head office then head office would send orders to store sometimes there be a few juts far too many.

Home delivery in store was different that was free over £25 but customer had to go into store and pay then iceland would pack and deliver. With that we used to zone areas so driver wasent going one side to other and back again as most stores only had 1 van. In wiltshire much of it was rural and few towns and villages and head office never had any common sense with ho to fit in the online shop going from warminter to bradford on avon again and back to warminster was daft.

The company scrapped as said wasent enough profit in it so scrapped it.

When I joined they were proud to say no to gm, they also launched organics which sadly failed as bringing affordable organics to everyone seemed good but many icelands are in deprived are in deprived areas so the main demographic were not bothered.

Just before I left they changed again was all

kerry katona advertising.-was she really worth the £600,000 they paid her alientated many customers and they stopped shopping there.

Then theres the rounding up of prices to £1,£2 but reduction in sizes and weight.

A lot of deals in 1st ailses bog off/half price went.
A lot doubled in price or went up on bog off.
they used to be cheapest in milk but can get £1 milk aldis now and local shops.

Its bit out my way so havent been in few years.
If we have car we go farmfoods instead.

Agree dont like farmfoods frozen fish icelands was better.
Iceland use to be competative for desserts and icecreams.
    frozen veg was ok.
    Fresh veg was poor.
    egg deals were battery eggs
wine used to be quite competative on

we eat more fresh than we do frozen
or I buy fresh and freeze.

we buy branded frozen chicken/fish birdseye and farmfoods onw brand veg often 3 for 2 , bigger weight plus 10%off coupons.

not sure how other frozen food retailers compare think herons northern, my old hoe town had cooltrader which my aunt loved.

wow I found an upmarket frozen food retailer that looks interesting they have shops and deliver/online and possibly do organic but hefty price. we have a shop near me.

The sunday meal boxes for 6 at less than 5quid per head could be good value for money if having guest round depending on how big portions are.

Ok did a bit of research.

iceland is biggest frozen food retailer coverage in uk.

    Farmfoods ok.

iceland sold their cool trader brand to heron.

    My nearest heron is birmingham.

Up north and north wales/midlands they have 3 possibly all 4

maybe those who live near them all or tried them all can tell me if Iceland really offers the best value?

Like I say havent been in Iceland in a while.

Im not against frozen food as feel it has its place.
on really dire months in past we have just done frozen food and after a while get fed up of it. plus not sure offers best value for example typical frozen meal least once aweek in our house is

b/e frozen breaded fish on offer at £3
bag oven chips me and kids dont mind own brand hubby likes mcain least £2.50-but last 2-3meals
frozen petit pois-farmfoods it £1 lot more in other places.

estimate total cost of meal for family of 5 as 2younger ones have half frozen fish as they 3 and 20months possibly £4.75 as bag chips and peas will usually last least 2meals .

    £4.75/4 approx £1.20 per portion.

But if I whoopsie shop and get fresh mince at £1-sometimes half price lidls at £1.39..

I then add value spagetti 30p a pack
    value garlic bread 35p
    passatta 29p
1onion and garlic-although i like frozen onion and garlic but fresh approx costs 20p

approx cost £2.15 /4 people 55p per head and think is much nicer meal even if add grated cheese on top its a lot less.

I think with frozen it works out better if cooking for 1/2people.
My husband can easily eat frozen pizza to himself they not that big.
cost of making one from scratch is

    bread flour 60p lidls
    yeast 39p sachets lidls
    passatta 29p lidls
    mozzarella 49p.
    value dried herbs 17p sainsburys

add little oil and whatever toppings have let estimate extra toppings at say 50p.

    aprrox £2.50 makes me 5-6pizzas
frozen pizza at £1, £1.50 or £2 dont seem that great value.

I agree you can make some nice meals from frozen

I find frozen stew packs/peppers handy for casseroles
    frozen onion/mushrooms handy
frozen plain fish baked with passatta , greated cheese and herbs yum
frozen broccoli and cauli ideal for cheese bake.

But the majority of it is

    unhealthy
    prepacked convieniance
    small portions
    expensive.

The core iceland shopper generally does eat lots of ready meals as seen trolleys laden with ready meals and frozen pizzas.

Theres the seasonal customers who just use for desserts and party goods. But all the other retailers do 3 for £5 now for same thing.
I used to buy party stuff but now make my own.

For me most stuff can get cheaper/same price and except farmfoods nearer.

Gailey do you only buy branded frozen food? i think thats where your going wrong :)

iceland chicken nuggets £3 and are made with 100% chicken breast, i prefer them to branded (and i prefer there fishfingers aswell) i get 3 dinners from a bag so £1
iceland own chips £1 (tesco value are better value) use half a bag £1so 50p
iceland own peas £1 (again tesco value are slightly better value and nicer imo) use 1/4 bag so 25p

total £1.75 and thats for 5 of us, so less than one happymeal.

fishfingers work out even cheaper as the kids only have 2 where as they have about 6 nuggets as there small, i remeber comparing the fish content to one of the branded names and there was more fish in icelands.

I like iceland i think it's good to have a treat or lazy day, i like being able to say mummy will make you a happymeal at home and saving myself £15, i only go every few months tho, when i was preg i craved fishfinger sandwichs so went loads, and afterwards we had no money by the time we bought formula for 2 babys so me and hubby lived off junk for about 6 months we had about £5 a week for food so yes i do prefer proper home cooked dinner but i've prob tried all the cheapo food going and still prefer iceland :)

You are right tho it is aimed at people who eat alot of ready meals, i remeber seeing a very ill looking elederly man buying 7 breakfast ready meals, and 7 bangers and mash ready meals and thats it and wondering if that was his food for the week and if so no wonder he looked so ill.

I'm sorry but comparing BE fish and mcain chips to value spaghetti and whoopsie mince is completely pointless.

If you want to do a real comparison why not compare the same meal from different shops.
