British gas

I recently requested a refund of my credit balance , at the time it calculated my payments would rise to £110 pm [not much more that im paying now] . ive had an email to say they will actually rise to £220 pm !!!!!!
Im always in credit so can anyone tell me why the huge rise ? ive emailed them and told them i wont accept the new figure and i will cancel my d/d and pay quarterly if its not put back to £110.

If you did this online it looks like a system glitch. Check your last years bills and make sure they are not estimates. Then add on if the price rise of 6% has affected you and split this by 12. See what figure you then get. I had my response to an online query within 48 hours last month but the holiday period may delay this a little.

none of my bills are estimates i submit readings just before each bill is due and when i requested my refund it wanted readings worked out what i owed then refunded the difference.
my pre refund payments were £95 pm for gas and electric so rising to £110 isnt too bad.
ive emailed them so i will just wait and see what they say.

Had a response and they are saying that its right in somehow supposed to jump from under £100 for both gas and elec to £110 each ! When I calm down I will ring them if they won't budge I will stop my d/d

updae- just realised i can alter my d/d amount so ive put it to £110 which states i may end up owing them £31, if they take payments of £220 they estimate i will end up over £400 in credit.
now i know im tired but these figures just dont seem right .

If you do what I suggested above and then give them a figure of what the monthly payment works out broken down to them they should accept this. The only time this will not work is if you are coming to the end of your payment plan year when they will expect a zero balance if the payment amount is correct.

Exactly the same with me. In credit just before Christmas to the tune of £400, requested refund online, and the cheeky beggars put up the direct debit from £50 per month for the gas to £96 and for electricity £50 to £86. I was in credit for goodness sake and I'm careful what I use, I doubt very much I will be using £96 a month in gas, its freezing in my home cause I refuse to have the heating on more than a couple of hours a day.

It states on my account that I could be in credit by £329 at the end of the payment plan - I don't understand it myself, BG are trying it on - in my opinion :p.

Merlot 123. I can understand the systems reason if your payment plan ends after winter. I pay £50 per month ( prefer overpaying) but if I took a refund now, as I used between £80 and £100 for a few months in winter last year hosting foreign language students, the system would then anticipate me having an outstanding balance in March when my plan ends. In this case it would increase my monthly payment by a lot for the next couple of months.

It is great having an online account as you get so much info from it.If after checking last winters bills you think it's wrong then do what CHRISSG did and change your payment amount online.

  • I have had a similar problem with BG, who wanted to put up my gas bill from £14pm to £24, despite being massively in credit. I asked to drop the payments back to £14 and the lady on the phone agreed and made the change. However this month I have had £25 taken out of my account. I tried to change it online but it seemed that I wasn't allowed to pay less than £25 as this was the minimum amount! Fortunately I was able to change it again by phone, but are they really allowed to put the bills up without telling you?
