motor oil recycling

Don't have any spare containers to put used motor oil in. (I've got a 5 litre bottle and car takes only 3.5L).

Can I put the oil in a couple of empty coke bottles and take them to recycling?

What is the ball park cost for disposing of 3.5L of motor oil and do halfords/eurocarparts/kwikfit etc take them in or do you have to drive to a moto factors?

Pouring oil into a pop bottle might be a bit messy I would just buy one of the drain containers that halfrords et am sell. To dispose most tips will let you do it for free.

i'll pop a funnel into the empty bottle. to make pouring easier. It's really not an issue at all. I'd rather take engine oil in a 2ltr coke bottle and walk away than to wait for them to empty a drain tank which will take forever because the oil will be cold.

i bought those drain tanks from halfords never used it because it is difficult to clean on the inside (and the surface area is small so you get splash everywhere. Its better to have an open dran pain which has a large surface area and high capacity like 9L so you can drain the cooling system as well. Good drain pans have a pouring spout which you can use to pour liquids into containers easily.
  • have you a recycling centre close by, ours here in cornwall take waste oil they have a large plastic tank 1200lt just pour it in and no charge, they take old tyres aswell saves paying for disposal.

Or use the old oil to paint a garden fence panel.

Comes out black but makes an excellent preservative.

Take it to the local tip. Usually they have a section for used motor oil.

    +1.

Most council recycling centres are waste oil enabled.

Give your local council office a ring, and they will be able to put you through to the waste section to check they accept it.

If you need to drain it, then turn a 1 gallon oil container on it's side, and cut a large hole in it to accept the oil when you drain it. (Leave the screw lid in situ!!!!) Then take another 1 gallon container, and transfer it into that and take it to the council site.

    Job done.
That's my mutt in the picture above.

thanks. just found the council web page on domestic waste recycling. They have a free motor oil collection facility.

I'm surprised that some people charge for disposal given that they turn it back into usable motor oil and make money from it.

yes when you vandalise your property yourself. It prevents others from doing it ;)

    j/k

haven't tried it but smearing your garden fence with engine oil sounds like a cheap and very temperoray solution. A good woodstain can be had for a tenner and will last loner than motor oil and have the right colour to stain the fence properly.
