    I've been Money Tipped!
I have my ipad on loan from my primary school. We're assessing whether we should buy a class set. Answer is definitely yes as the education apps are excellent, nothing compares on android.

Too many people get suckered into the 'iPad is better' way of thinking that apple have done so well getting out there. It is better in many ways for lots of things...and worse in others. That bit doesn't get out there.

If you know what you'll be doing with your tablet, then that helps decide. Most people just want to use it like your mum...and think Apple are the only way these needs can be met. It's not.

Thanks for all this advice so far!

I have had an iPhone for years which I love and haven't ever really used an android tablet/phone other than messing about with friend's phones in the pub, etc. Might sound like a daft question but based on a lot of the comments above why would you ever go for an iPad over Nexus/Galaxy if you were just using the basics (FB, iplayer, email)?

Marketing that convinces you it is the option of choice.

Why do people drive a BMW rather than an VW?

Why do people by branded groceries over own label?

The Apple package works at a price. It is dumb ed down to make it work consistently in a particular fashion and for that you pay a hefty premium.

There seems to have been a lot of Apple advertising on over xmas so perhaps the veneer is slipping.

You'd go for it because you prefer iOS over Android, and the way the Apple ecosystem works, and you value the offer that Apple provide.

Or a lot of people just buy it because it is the brand to be seen with not having a clue how it all fits together.

That's the same for any large, well known brand though. That would mean we all buy devices simply because of the brand! And that's certainly not the case.

We, may not, I would suggest a good many do.

If you have never "tasted" anything different how will they know?

They won't, but buying a product from a company who has a reputation for making excellent products would be a wise move in my books.

Another option is to get a netbook - we use ours sitting on the sofa, and it is quite nice that you don't have to hold it to have the screen at a comfortable angle. And she might find the keyboard easier to type when replying to emails etc.

Go for whichever one YOU can use best. My grandfather has an iPad 2 and my brother decided to steal my dad's idea to get my mum an e-reader and got her an iPad mini. I hardly know anything about Apple products yet I'm always asked to fix theirs. Most of the time I end up on forums like this full of Apple users who can't use their shiny toys.

So go for the one you can use and explain :D

My wife says to me "are you playing with my Nexus again?" (No - that's NOT a euphemism!) :rotfl:

I say "Well when you can't work out how to do something you'll ask me, so I'll need to know the answer". ;)
