My flat smells like weed (serious thread)

Hello. Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year.
This is a bit of a weird one.

Our flat has started smelling like weed. We're both anti-drugs so it's definitely not something we've been smoking!

It's a new build property which was completed in December 2011 and we are the first occupants.

We're not sure where it's coming from but it's strongest in the lounge and hallway near the boiler cupboard/bathroom.

I'm not sure what to do about it. I couldn't put my finger on the smell until my sister-in-law pointed out that it smells like weed and it does (not that I've been around many people who smoke it!)

We have a 4 week old so I'm worried. I don't think it's coming from the neighbours (although I guess you can never be too sure).

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the cause could be?

Thank you.

  • I'd guess its coming from a neighbour. Most likely from below but could be from the side.

Are you on the top floor?

Boiler cupboard/bathroom sounds like it si coming up a service duct of some kind.

Go around to your neighbours and ask them. Inform them you are trying to trace the smell yourself before calling in the police drug dog.:D

Yep. Top floor but there are only two floors. We live in those style flats where we each have an outside door to our own flats but those upstairs have stairs to get to their flat, if that makes sense?

I guess it could be coming from a neighbour but none of the neighbours seem like they would smoke weed (not that there is a particular type of "weed smoker" or anything). :o

Hard to say who is and isnt a smoker or grower. A retired clockmaker and his wife were recently caught growing weed on his small holding in a local village not long ago. Nobody had a clue until a firearms incident at the property caused the police to find his stash.

I suppose you could trace where pipes go through the floor/wall/ceiling, and try and seal the gap with some insulation.

This is going to sound daft but, as you now have a young baby, do you have any new nursery furniture, prams etc stored in the lounge and/or hallway? If so, can I suggest that you move said item into your bedroom for 24hours to see if the smell moves?

In my case, the smell wasn't in the house but in the car - Andrew's car seats!! I don't know what they're padded with, but he's on his second seat now and both have smelt of weed :rotfl:

It could be hemp insulation board or pipe lagging.

It is one of the new 'in things' as far as Eco products are concerned.
