Charging a new Kindle Fire HD

I got a new Kindle Fire HD for Christmas. I thought I would charge it up.
I connected it via the USB cable supplied to my laptop and on the Device page, it showed 50% battery remaining (charging) and the little icon in the top right of the scree has the green charging icon going back and forth. However, it doesn't seem to move past 50%, I left it overnight plugged into the laptop. The laptop was off but connected to the mains. The Kindle was off or on sleep mode.
Am I doing something wrong as it indicates charging yet no charging seems to really take place?

Don't know about a Kindle Fire but if I charge anything on my computer once the computer goes to sleep or if I power my computer down it does not continue to charge - my guess would be it shouldn't take all night to charge but also my guess is it won't charge unless computer is on - try again while computer is on and if it still doesn't charge past 50% take it back!

Do you have any USB adaptors for charging phones etc directly from the mains. Perhaps a phone charger via USB rated 5v1A? My daufghter uses her android phone adapter with USb/microUSB cable to charge her Nexus.

It does ay 11.5 hours, via laptop/PC on the advertising blurb. the output is 5V~0.5A

The expensive power adapter is rated at 5v1.8A and takes 3 hours to charge, according to the advertising (0.5A/1.8Ax11.5 = 3 roughly)
