Regular Index Threads- why do people dupe these comps so frequently?

Would people be more prepared to use these instead of duping posts or reposting every day/week or whenever they feel like it because its an enter once only competition but "hidden away in regs" if they were stickies on main rather than in regs?

Given how so many people have no problems with using the advent thread to leave links to the threads that are updated daily for them, or to find them to enter form each day/week or initially then add to own bookmarks?

Yet it seems an impossible task for so many to understand or find the daily, weekly and once only threads which work in EXACTLY THE SAME WAY as the advent thread did/does and merely index ALL the comps that can be entered regularly, both those on main and those in regs!

Please explain to me what it is that is so hard to understand about these threads or is it really that to get to one means a whole 2 extra clicks away form main board at the minute?

Some people can find them to add links to but still insist on reposting and duping threads linked in them creating more work with merges for board guides, and more work for those of us who use these threads either to enter form or to bookmark from as we then have to open a new thread (among the hundreds of other new comps we have not entered) to discover that actually its one we have already entered but is not ticked because its a brand new thread that is a duplicate!

Monthly comps that can be re entered every single month, thus are a brand new comp every month and a previous months entry does not carry over, should be reposted every single month, do people REALLY want the hundreds of weekly and daily comps added as new threads each day/week with all the added opening of threads to see its one you looked at and chose not to enter yesteday/last week/last month because its not a prize you want?

Is it really as hard as it is implied to go into the regs forum and enter or accept that if thats too much effort for you you will miss out on those comps?

Because if it is then I will go beg Andrea to let us move the hundreds of comps in regs to main, where they can be hidden and lost among the hundreds of new comps posted every day and the only way to find them is via the stickies IF we are allowed them as stickies at the top of main, or by hunting down those threads everyday when they get bumped to age 12/13/14 whatever because of the 200odd new comps posted everyday, if that would really be preferred by those who cannot or will not stop duping?

Hi Purplecatlover, since you have asked for feedback, I will put my two pennorth in.

I seldom venture into the regulars board. When I do, I prefer to just look at the threads, rather than the lists and just browse through them. A few times, I have commented on various threads, perhaps asking a question. It seems that on the regulars boards, such questions go unanswered, whereas on the main board, somebody would respond.

Here are a few examples of such threads:-

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3367020

    https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/3694351

Because of this, I tend to not bother going over there very much.

If I post a new competition that is say weekly, I will add a link to the relevant thread, but I don't then use the thread myself.

If you had not raised the question of regulars, I would not have even bothered mentioning it, I would simply have carried on ignoring regulars to a large extent, as I don't wish to be seen as moaning, as I know that you and a lot of MSER's put a lot of effort into the lists. I do think though that a lot of the links are probably dead ends and the competitions no longer exist. The people that do regulars probably just bookmark their favourites and nobody realises others have died a death.

Sorry to moan and many thanks for all that you do. Hope that 2013 is a good year for you.

I have to say I agree with marg that I don't look at the regular board as when I did look when I first started I found some of them were no longer active. I keep my own log of dailies/weeklies to enter that I copy from the main board as I find them, that way I don't have to trawl through lots of pages each day to find the ones I want. I will post in there if I find one to add or to add an answer to a weekly if needed but that's about all for me.

yes but if people aren't using they boards properly then surely that is their problem? while I appreciate the effort certain people go to to repost "monthly" comps diligently on the 1st of every month, they really shouldn't be. as PCL said, only none-carry-over comps should be reposted monthly as any other is surely a 'enter once' comp.

I'm the same - make my own bookmarks from daily/weekly comps posted on the main board. I never look at the regulars board - just the main!
:TA big thanks to all who post and sprinkling lucky dust to all who enter :smileyhea
  • So if going to the regulars board is too much hassle to find comps, are you happy to miss out on those comps? I'm askling because of all the "hidden in regs so not enough thanks" (paraphrased) comments. I understad people don't want to go there necessarily but I don't understand how another chunk of pages in E: 31/12 for example would be helpful once they get buried on main?

I understand not going to regs, its the duping of the posts I don't get, I already find it difficult to find recurring comps with an end date on main, (hence I find them in the threads, either in the initial liost, or at the end of the thread, which is what most of us do with advents is it not?) as they get lost so easily among the hundreds others, and constant bumping to update always leads to complaints about the first few pages on main not being genuinely new comps as it fills up with bumped daily threads.

Would it be better daily/weekly/once only threads if those were on main instead?

does reposting all the once only comps on main really help you enter them? what if you entered 6 mths ago and thus are removing your eligibility to win , possibly ever again if they blacklist email addys, by entering again?

it is very helpful if people finding a no longer active comp report it to a bg to be removed, but like with merge requests its easier to just ignore and carry on :)

I'm not sure I completely understand - not with the way my head is this morning, but I also hardly use the regs board, other than for the magazine dailies, which I try and do most days. Other than that, I use my own compiled list of regular comps that I pull from the main board.

I also wonder if there is a better way of recording these comps. What do peeps think of doing more threads like those for The Puzzler, and for Take A Break puzzles?

So, for the magazines, instead of keeping them in regs, what if they were updated on a thread, or threads, on the main board? Either one thread for them all, or one for Chat, one for WOTV, etc. Don't think it would need to be a sticky, because it would be updated often enough to hover near the top - and anyway, we could always subscribe to the thread/s.

Similarly, perhaps the other regulars could also use 'floating' threads on the main board.

I think that should minimalise dupes, but also allow bumping when needed, which would also bring the comps to the attention of newbies every now and then.

I'm not sure which regs you are referring to - but like others, I only use the main board, once it gets posted there, I make my own note of whatever dailies I want to do.

I thought how the regular boards worked was that they just linked to the original post anyway?

I'm not entirely sure what you're so angry about?
  • My head hurts .... :D

Maybe you could give an example of this, because I'm not sure I know what you mean ....

I'm not sure what your main point is, if it is the comps being duped on the main board would it not fall under the normal way of reporting a dupe? Sorry if I am missing the point here, I skip these posts in the main board and would wherever they would be posted as I have my own way which is no way a dig on the people who post the comps or maintain the boards, I just do it my own way as it works for me. Would you like someone to go through the regs board and see which ones are still active and update the list maybe?. I could have a go at it but would take me a while to go through them all but I don't mind if it helps?

On reading this again, I don't think that I actually answered the original question, which is why people duplicate comps that are already posted. Sorry I have no idea. Sorry if I have done this.
