The lady at the till didn't seem to want to help figure out what happened (till said 17.99, catalogue said 17.99, then it's 17.99, not what my reservation email said), but a guy on the floor noticed I spent a little too much time at that till and asked if there's anything wrong, then he corrected the price manually as if it were natural - no questions asked, no investigations, he just said "that's 3.99", typed it into the till, and away I was. Weird.

Copy and paste of an email l got from Argos just before christmas as l didn't notice until l got home from the store that the item had increased in price.

This means that if you reserve an item whilst it is on a promotion and the price returns to original price during the reservation period, we do honour the promotional price. I just remembered to check this, and this is what I found in the Terms and Conditions posted to their website:

4.3 The price you pay is the price displayed on this website at the time we receive your order apart from the following two exceptions:
a) For products reserved online for store pick up or any other reservation service the price you pay is the price in store on the day of collection.
b) [...]

There's no price guarantee there. If anything, that section is a price non-guarantee. They can't chase me for the difference or return if they figure this out but this article is worth remembering.
