Income protection - Right to Request copies of cheques

Hopefully a quick question for one of the fine posters on here.

A friend of mine is a chauffeur and has had an income protection insurance plan. He was involved in a car crash, and unable to work for a number of months.

The insurance company were making payments for a period of time, however ceased when bank statements showing a chequed paid in relating to prior employment were received by the insurance company.

We're trying to trace the exact source of the cheque as there were a number of different employers, however the bank claims they are unable to trace the account from which the money was taken.

Are banks required to keep copies of cheques and are they required to provide then to the account holder? As the exact source of the cheque can't be traced, a substantial amount of money is being withheld as the insurer believes that he was working at a time when he was unable to.

The cheque will have the sort code & account number of the payee on it. As well as the NAME of the payee.....
Simple case of matching the 2 upto known payee's.

Yes. Cheques are kept for 6 years. In fact you might find the bank has a electronic copy on their systems to print off and send out.
They may cahrge for sending a copy out though.

That's pretty much what I expected from my experiences working in a finance area of a big company. I've passed the information on, and hopefully we have a swift resolution.
