Help!

Hi all just wondered if somebody could give me some advice. We have adopted a new cat from the cats protection and she has recently started scratching the walls in the hallway, no where else in the house. This has annoyed my landlord and I promised I would try and get her to stop. Is there anything I can use to stop her?

The cats protection think she is between 6-8 and she has a massive selection of toys and a very nice scratching post which she ignores! She is such a princess lol. Thanks for any advice!

  • Is the wallpaper textured and raised type?
  • Have you tried rubbing catnip on the post? I know your cats not a kitten but when we got Salem he would scratch things he wasn't supposed to until we tried catnip on his scratch post. We did end up having to buy several scratch posts to put round the house in the areas he was scratching but he did stop.

  • Yes it is (or was) bumpy wall paper. Got catnip spray but its just making her lick and chew the scratching post.

The only thing i found once they get a 'feel' for a place is to put scratch posts up nailed to the wall where they like.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.

You can put double sided tape or aluminium foil in the area if it's not too large. Also, cats hate citrus, so you could try leaving orange peel on the floor in the area if feasible to stop her going to there in the first place.

Did you pay your Landlord a deposit to cover any potential damage done during your tenancy?

TBH, if its a rental and the damage has already been done, then provided the cat is only using that one spot, then I wouldn't bother doing anything - just give the landlord an undertaking that that the hall will be redecorated to his specification on vacating the property - He's covered with having your deposit anyway.

  • Sorry just to clear things up a bit. The landlord is a family friend so we didn't need to pay a deposit at all but we promised to re-decorate the hall anyway. We are renting but saving up to buy the house off them so we won't be moving at all. She has started on the opposite wall or I would just leave her to it. A friend suggested spraying water at her or getting her de clawed but that feels cruel to me.

She is so loving but because she is an indoor cat I feel she is getting bored even with her own body weight in toys. Got her a lead and harnis today so hopefully that makes her too tired to claw anything lol.

Catnip spray is not the same as dried catnip. Try sprinkling some of the proper stuff (like this) on the post and placing it, as already suggested, in the vicinity of the wall she's scratching.

try spraying the area with a lemon or orange oil. Most cats don't like citrus.
Cats don't have owners - they have staff!! :D:p
