Does it have to be an actual present ?How about an experience,my hubby bought me an indoor sky diving thingy!!! but you can get virtually anything .

I agree with suejb2. An "experience" will never be forgotten whereas a pen or a tankard will probably be consigned to a junk drawer one day.

    What's your budget?
  • my mum wanted to get my brother a tankard for his birthday, but i too thought it wouldn't be appreciated. he likes football and is getting a personalised kit so to go with it we've got him a glass football trophy engraved with a message wishing him 'Happy 18th Birthday Kris' much more appropriate but still has the same effect as an engraved tankard. they do them for so many other sports and different things so there are lots of options.

Years ago if our family had a difficult choice similar to what you are having we always purchased M&S Gift Vouchers whereby, although it looked rather bland, it certainly took away the 'unwanted present' disappointment.

This day and age you could choose to purchase a Gift Voucher from a Music Shop or a similar choice that he may already be doing, check this with your daughter for more clues.

    Good Luck

We recently gave my nephew a really good swiss army penknife for his birthday so that might be an idea. My nephew was a Scout so very appropriate but a penknife is one of those things that often comes in handy for all sorts of things

Don't forget to make him buy it from you though (so it doesn't "cut off" your friendship!! It was quite funny watching my nephew scratch around to find a penny or two while wondering why he had to buy this parcel from us!

As he is a scout a penknife may have been appropriate for him, but personally I wouldn't be buying a knife for an 18 year old. He could be out on the town carrying it without realising and if involved in any issue could find himself suspected of an intent he never had, or worse, have it used against him.

I would also go with the experience; driving, tour of his favourite football stadium, helicopter etc.

I would avoid this at the moment as many are teetering on the edge.

A night with a decent prostitute would probably be appreciated, and possibly educational.
  • thanks for all the helpful replies.
I liked the idea of a penknife but of course todays society wont allow for such useful items anymore! Out go stones in horses hooves and in comes street violence..sadly.

The music shop vouchers are a good idea too but of course the problem with shops going under....

A night with a prostitute may be educational but would go down like a lead balloon with my daughter, but thanks for your kind and practical suggestion :/

I might go for something totally way out like knit him a jumper! May be old fashioned but like the idea of a pen :/

cheers everyone :) gave me a chuckle too!

  • Not sure what there is near you but we recently bought my cousin Segway experience. They are often on Groupon/wowcher etc and look like great fun at very affordable price. My cousin hasn't been yet but is very much looking forward to it
