See the only problem is, if you didn't own a TV it'd be like paying a TV license to own a laptop, which is a ludicrous notion which you could never be prosecuted on. You'd need to actually own a TV and be receiving a signal to be charged a license.

Hi, twinkle, We are required to have a licence to watch TV, even without a TV set (not in public venues though, as someone else will have a bought a licence for that purpose). Have a look at this site:
    http://www.tvlicensing.co.uk/information/index.jsp

It says: "You need a TV Licence to use any television receiving equipment such as a TV set, set-top boxes, video or DVD recorders, computers or mobile phones to watch or record TV programmes as they are being shown on TV".

But don't they mean a computer with installed TV-tuner? And not just any computer?

I agree with you. No TV card in this laptop, no TVs in the house.

Sounded interesting, and I have seen the adverts on 4 so decided
to give it a try. Installed the software, upgraded my WMPlayer and tried to watch a program at which point the 4od software told me I needed a DRM upgrade!

I'm not a fan of DRM so I have uninstalled it. I will stick to watching the repeats on the telly as they seem to repeat progs every other day anyway.

With regards to needing a TV licence to watch telly on a PC, I can't really see how they could enforce that.

Personally I don't agree with the extortionate fees obtained by the BBC from TV licencing (particularly as you need a TV licence whether you watch BBC channels or not!) just so they can hand it over in bucket loads to the useless luvvies that the BBC employ once and then (via the old pals network) get work for the BBC for the rest of their lives - all out of licence payers money! Rant Over! :D

I'm not concerned whether you or anyone else has a TV licence! I just wanted to let you know that the law requires you to have one!

sorry darling, you are slightly mistaken, whats not allowed on line are those slot in tv cards, not the downloadable tv programmes, plus there is a small fee from channel 4 before watching any programmes i.e roughly £1-4
  • So C4's promise of repeats seems to be a waste of time, anyway? I haven't tried it, but from what people have said, it appears to involve a fair bit of messing about, plus a fee of up to £4 to view? Hardly freebie then? Just like you, raptorman, I'll stick to C4's (many) terrestrial repeats, which are better viewed on a bigger flat screen telly anyway (for which I have a licence, BTW! ;)).

Not compatible with Linux so a waste of time for me.
  • you can watch repeats of c4 shows up to 7 days after they've been shown live for free. There are certain other programmes and films you have to pay for though. So it is useful if you've missed something on c4 and forgot to record it too.
'Lose' - as in "I hate to lose" only has one 'o'.
'Loose' - as in 'Loose change' is not the same word!
