Appointing solicitors (house sale)

I have been quite fortunate to have received an offer on my house within a week of appointing my estate agent (not half as fortunate as my agent !!!).
However I have not yet got around to appointing (or even looking into) a solicitor.
Having never sold before and never been through this process can anyone tell me what I need to be looking for in my solicitor ?
Ie what do I need to ensure they include in their service etc, what questions to ask - I don't want to go in blindly and just appoint on cost alone.
Thanks in anticipation,
Mr_F.

In ringing around since posting this thread I am getting large differences in quotes. If I ring my local solicitor firms I am looking at approx £800-£900 all in (including VAT) on the conveyancing of just house sale.
However I have found two 'direct' internet type conveyancing firms that are hugely cheaper. The first is sort of a half way house (in that they seem to farm the work out to a solicitor) and have quoted £576 all in and the cheapest is Hammonds Direct who look like a purely internet driven business at £323 (inc VAT).
Has anyone used one of these directs (especially Hammons Direct) ?
Is there something I am missing, any hidden costs etc ?
Are they easy to deal with or is it a factory churning process with no direct comms and hence more trouble than its worth ?
Any feedback/views would be most welcome.0
