How did you get started?

Just interested in people's stories of how they got started on selling as a business on ebay really. It's something I have been toying with doing here in the UK, after a year of buying to on-sell in Australia (with appropriate tax etc, don't worry). I'm aware I will need to do a load of research into the market but would love to hear how people ended up doing what they do now - necessity? Retirement? Stumbled into it? Are you selling things you love or just products you know will sell?

To be clear I'm not asking for any information on what people sell or where they source it from etc, I'm just looking for inspiring stories!

The selling we were doing in Australia we stumbled into after buying some stuff for ourselves but not wanting to keep it all. We sold a few things on and found that we seemed to have a decent eye for selling things on so we stuck with it until we moved back here but only as a hobby really (although still with appropriate tax/policies/record keeping etc).

Well I was on the dole and couldn't get a job so went with my Mum to sell some of her stuff at a boot fair. Got really interested in it, whereas she didn't. Found out where all the local boot fairs were, six days a week in this area in the summer. Made friends with other sellers and ended up signing off the dole and registering with HMRC as a sole trader so that I could concentrate on the boot fairs. I then started going to auctions to buy stock and bought some job lots off Ebay.

I then started listing books for a friend on Amazon and started selling some collectibles I'd bought at the auctions on Ebay. Got more into Ebay and Amazon rather than standing around in muddy fields and now do Ebay / Amazon full time with the occasional boot sale to buy stock.

I'm concentrating now on simple to post collectible stuff as in the past I'd been selling china and glass which was always hassle to pack and post and I also have a recurring widget that sells slow but steady that I manufacture myself.

I still go to the odd boot fair hoping for that elusive, buy for 10p sell for millions item that no one else has spotted. Not happened yet though :D
