prepayment meter

We live in a house which we rented out till last december (tenannt moved out). We did a lot of renovations then moved in over the summer. We have an electric payment meter which we regulalry topped up with the key as the builders needed electricity. In the midst of the whole shenanigans I didn't tell them the tennant moved out till 3 weeks ago when I got a letter in the tennants name. No debt or anything just a statement.

I called them told them that he left & they said I needed to reset the key/meter & theyd change the name. Fine no probs. checked the meter & it showed I had no debt. On Saturday I got a statement showing all the transactions since Dec last year (after he moved out) till the 1st of Dec. Fine (now kept it in a safe place - too safe I can't find it!!!). Today I got a statement in my name showing a debt of £342!! Now the account number is the same, meter number is the same & the meter is still shoiwng debt at £0.00. I know there is no debt as we have paid in to the meter, transactions are showing.

So why is it showing a debt in my name?

theres a couple of possibilitys, hes been tampering with the meter, is screen "A " showing a standing charge debt. also there are people around now flogging half price electricty, by means of a cloned engineers key, but this is a big city thing , not likely in rural Wales. Check that the lower metal seal is intact, which gives access to the lower cover where bypassing can be done. There is another "debt screen " to check also, I forget which screen its on, this is a " debt added " screen
If all is OK with the meter it will proberbly be just a "systems " mess up. On the screen there are full details of kwhrs useage and total money payed so you can check everything

My guess is the debt is backdated from when you took over, by using the key it went on the previous occs account
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

CHANZ4 - thank you. I checked this site, just called them & you are 100% right!! Thank you so much. When I called them a few week ago the chap asked me when we moved in & I gave them that very date. Then between the date he moved out & the date we moved in there was a 7.5 month gap. in which I was using the key to top up. So my account showed I hadn't paid but I was payiing in tot he tennants account.

Nice lady called Pam sorted it & has now transferred all the details of transactions to my new account. And I found the statement showing all dated I paid in.

    Silly me.
