hi
sorry to sound a bit dense, but this is the 1st time ive had to renew car insurance.
its due to run out on the 20th jan, and ive just phoned my current insurer to find out about their renewal offer, and its pants, so ive started getting quotes online and there are some much cheaper options out there.
my question is, how soon can i sign up to new insurance? do i need to wait until the 20th or can i get it sorted now with the date of commencement as the 20th?
and do i need to wait until ive told my current insurer i dont want to renew and make sure its all cancelled with them?
thanks!

you can sort it now and have the start date of the 20th. If going elsewhere, remember to advise your current insurer that you are not taking a new policy. If you check your details from taking your current policy you may find that they will autorenew unless you advise them otherwise0

As above make sure you cancel the renewal. Not the current policy.
Phone them, Record the call if you can AND back that up with a recorded delivery letter stating you will not be renewing.
You can take out the new insurance now to start when your current policy finishes. It must not start before because any no claims will be in use already.
Mine ends in a couple of weeks and its all paid up and done. Just wait for the new documents to arrive. And i still check the askmid.com database to make sure my cars showing as insured.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0
