Be cautious with value lines
Options
Im sure many of you are super clued up already.
I predominatly out of big shop sainsburys so their basic products.
during last year huge rises.
value fromage frais went from 44p to 50p.
value pepper 17p-45p
The baby wipes 23p went up to 46p .
I used to get so annoyed as every other week price was different
prices raised on value lines the people who are really struggling and couldent afford the rises. I wasent sure if premuim ;lines had risen by same value.
anyways I think tesco/sainsburys offer biggest value ranges.
morisions do but not online so have to go into store to check.
I infrequently go in asda so couldent really say there.
So if in big 4
find an item you want
check the branded price
premuim own brand -if they have one
own brand
value brand on prices between them.
say for example pack branded beans on offer at £1 for 4 that would work out cheaper than value ones.
Also compare weights.
I just had quick look at tesco value online sure some stuff seems cheap but others seem really pricey.
The value beans seem to have more sauce than beans.
we not snobby we try some value products if we like we buy again and some off list like value weetabix or rice krispies yuck..
its case of trying things out.
My advice is dont rely on big 4
shop around at nearest poundshop as some thins are a rip but others multipack branded items can work out cheaper.
ie sainsburys basic cereal bars. 98p, pund shop weetabix bars or cadburys brunch £1 just 2p more.
Ask is it the cheapest but does it offer the value in terms of quality.
we always try do cheaper supermarket first so aldis or lidls.
then go big boys for reductions and thins we cant get.
hubbys brand snob but was happy with the aldis own brand beans.
They also do value.
Their super six can workout cheaper than sainsburys basic value or tesco value which i dont think is that cheap some independant fruit and veg or market stall can work out cheaper.
Lilds-their nostia tinned tomatoes much nicer and not much more expensive that saisnburys basic.
Lidls/aldis has cheapest passata at 29p.
I keep reading on os board about 4p items never see them suggestion of u see a silly price like that buy in bulk.
I find lidls pasta better than value. hate value lasagne sheets they keep sticking, hate value butter and often branded stuff on offer at 89p or £1 most places so shop around.
Im sure if we shop around and buy smarter we can show the big 4 that we cant be bullied and can fight the rises.
so many of my freinds whine they broke but they dont shop around say they not got time, like to do online or say well they earn points.
Im hoping price rises are not s bad as 2012 as its been mental keeping up with it all.

I like Tesco and Morrisons value coffee. Both have been 47p for a long time and the only difference has been tesco comes in a jar and Morrisons comes in a packet.
Although I can't tell the difference, i usually buy Tesco Value coffee as I get club card points.
Today I noticed that Tesco value coffee had gone up to 53p, so made a mental note to get it at Morrisons. Then I went into Morrisons and their value coffee has gone up to 73p!0 -
E tried most asda value brand some of the stuff is quite nice ready meals biscuits beans soup the only thing I did t like the taste of was the coffeeNeeding to lose weight start date 26 December 2011 current loss 60 pound Down. Lots more to go to get into my size 6 jeans0

Blimey thats daft rise.
The only balue coffee i tried is sainsburys basics it was in packet and 48p couple months ago -we use it as backup coffee as normally get sainsburys or lidls gold brand.
maybe we should start list of essential value items to compare.
But in the past they copied each other
everyones value wipes were 46p
everyones fromage frais was fixed at same price.
maybe there rise in coffee market and we should start bulk buying.pad by xmas2010 £14,636.65/£20,000::beer:

Many people don't realise that supermarkets do not make profit on their value ranges. If production, raw ingredient and feed (for animal related items like eggs and meat) prices go up, then the prices of the value ranges go up.
Price sensitive is the term.0 -
Value ranges tend to either disappear or go up in price over Christmas then back in January and go down in price0

Many people don't realise that supermarkets do not make profit on their value ranges.
If they don't make a profit on their value ranges why have they spent so much on rebranding them and encouraging us to buy them? Why have Tesco introduced over 550 new Everyday Value lines this year.
I really can't see tesco spending billions trying to persuade us to stop buying items they make a profit on and start buying items they don't make a profit on.If production, raw ingredient and feed (for animal related items like eggs and meat) prices go up, then the prices of the value ranges go up.
Price sensitive is the term.
Yes but the increase in price doesn't reflect the increase in raw materials.
For example, this year Tesco were selling rice for £1 per 1kg bag. The cost of the rice was 4p per kg. China put the price of rice up to 5p per kg and Tesco increased the price of their rice to £1.20, saying the cost of rice had gone up 25% so they had to increase their price.
Price sensitive is not the term, too many people in this country are willing to believe the lame excuses for price rises than admit they are being ripped off.0 -

At an exchange rate of 1.62, 4p per kg is equivalent to a price of around $65 a metric tonne. The actual export price of rice is more like $400 to $1000 per metric tonne (depending on what kind of rice you're talking about). And those would be fob prices; so you'd have shipping etc costs on top. So your 4p per kg figure is probably wrong by a factor of 10.

P.S. I doubt Tesco buys rice from China. The Chinese are net importers of rice. Chinese rice production is no longer sufficient to meet Chinese consumption, and so the Chinese have been buying Vietnamese etc rice, thereby increasing the world price.0 -
I have noticed that Heinz soups in Poundland have the same size can as in supermarkets, but the weights given are less and also different soups are different weights too.
If you assume that everything in Poundland, 99p Stores etc is cheaper you can get caught out. For example recently if you bought 6 cans of Winalot in Poundland, thinking it would be cheaper than Ocado, you'd have been wrong.
But yes, providing you check prices and weights you can get some great bargains in these shops and not just on food.0 -
I think they must make small amount of profit on value.
I know tesco had huge drive on value lines as worries about competition from aldis and lidls.
The value seems more erratic.I think next time i see a price increase will look at same product own brand/or branded and see if thats gone up too but if only the value rice increased that would be weird.
I find with some items all 4 fixing at same price annoying.
Those on tight budget ho maybe buying value cant afford to trade up so accept the increase other groups ie the ones who buy premium/organiic have more choices.
My supermarket can no longer tell us whos cheaper as it doesnt include
farmfoods
iceland
pound shops
morrisions
co-op
aldis
lidls
im lucky as lidls on same retail park as sainsburys so go there 1st.
big teso has aldis, poundworld and poundstretcher nearby so would try those 1st and tesco last.
Im not against value lines per say find some liked mixed herbs good.
just realised its not all great value
often get reduced fresh lines-fresher better quality than value.
my bucthers is more competative on meat.
the fruit and veg shop is cheaper and the man who sells veg at carboots in summer.
The prepacked value readymeals/fresh fruit and veg seem very pricey.
often they small or odd shaped so supermarket must be buying it i at cheap rate as remember seeing hugh on tv moaning how much good fruits thrown away as doesnt meet supermarlet standard yet now its repacked and sold as value.
most value stuff apples seems to be priicemarked at about £1
aldi super six beats that with somethings 39p 49p or 69p.
The weekend deals in lidls can be fab and match or be cheaper than valueas thinks like mince go half price and least 1/fruit and veg line.
Yesterday I brought mr m value tropical juice 4pints £1.39! tesco non value tropical used to be £1 think was £1.25 last time I checked but same size tropical juice in aldis 69p.
Find morrisions tricky one to work out generally their frozen and grocery offers can be good but their value lines vary.
So its taking the time to check around.
I might start keeping a value line comparision table and checking monthly.pad by xmas2010 £14,636.65/£20,000::beer:

value ranges are not always the best value these days, as with everything, know your prices. shop around.
I used to buy value potatoes but always end up throwing a lot away as basically rotton or go off very quick, now get a pricier option but works out better as so far never had to throw any away - so penny for penny cheaper.I am responsible me, myself and I alone I am not the keeper others thoughts and words.0
