Very mature student - radiography.

Go for it! However, I would strongly recommend contacting the universities you are interested in to ask about your age and the course you want to apply for. I don't think you will have a problem getting a place in specialised radiology courses because it counts as one of the 'allied health professions' for which your primary qualification need not be in medicine. However if you are also considering cardiology then you will need to do a degree in graduate medicine, which is fiercely competitive. Some universities have an unofficial policy against admitting very mature students to MEDICAL courses (as I heard from the UCL admissions tutor three or four years ago), as it is heavily subsidised by the NHS and they want to get their thirty five years of labour out of their graduates, which you won't be able to give. Of course this might vary between universities. If you haven't done so already, have a look at NHS careers.

It's illegal to discriminate, and I know people on the medicine at Newcastle (one on GEP on on 5 year) in their 40's...
St Georges GEP medicine have made an offer to a 57 year old before, and the oldest student we have studying medicine is in her 4th year and is 51.April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200 -
Of course it's illegal to discriminate, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. Policies on graduate entry may have changed since four years ago also. My main point is that he needs to decide between going for an allied health profession, which includes radiology, physiotherapy, OH, and a whole range of other things, and which he can access through a specialised course; or go for a graduate medical course which is extremely competitive, but would enable him to do cardiology. If he goes for the medical course, even if there is no age discrimination at the university level he also needs to consider job prospects at a future time, e.g. when he applies for national training numbers. How likely is he to get a training post when he will reach retirement age before he gets to consultant level? etc.
Having said that, all is going topsy-turvy in the medical job ladder at the moment and there's probably no point thinking so far ahead.0 -
Thanks for that. If I have understood the prospectus correctly, the BSC(Cardiology) at Essex only requires A levels. You are not a qualified cardiologist at the end as that is a doctors post, but you can work the equipment and interpret the results. The doctor then makes the decisions. Sim a radiographer is not a radiologist.
Looking forwards to starting the access course. Just have to find the set book for less than £40. Human Biology - Boyle and Senior. Could club together and buy from WHS with their 3 for 2 offer, but I`ll keep looking. Found a secondhand copy on the web for £54. Best of luck to them.0 -

Amazon will have the cheapest second hand books, typically at 50% of their RRP. Find the book on Amazon.co.uk and on the listing, click on 'Used and New available from...' to take you to Amazon marketplace. They have Boyle and Senior 'Human Biology' for £20 (£5 P+P).
