Self employed class 4 contributions benerfits?

My partner is self employed, one man band, plumber and pays only class 4 contributions.

On Thursday lasyt week he was mowed down by a hit and run driver on a pelecan crossing. The injuries caused mean that he will be unable to work for at least 6 months.

He doesn't have any insurance or savings

My question is will he be entitled to claim any sick pay or C Tax benefit?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks
pam

What an awful thing to happen, wishing him a speedy recovery

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/benefits.htm

Class 4 National Insurance contributions - paid by some self-employed people - don't count towards any state benefits.

If he is also paying class 2 then he will be able to claim ESA
  • Do you have a job at all? If not, then you might be able to get him to claim ESA income related benefit. The application can be done over the phone to the DWP.
Council tax benefit can be claimed if you income is low enough. Same applies to housing benefit if in rented accomodation (social or private).
Do you have children together? If so there may be other benefits claimable.
More details needed to help further. Others will be around who can and do know more than I.

Class 4 contributions are an additional tax paid on self employed earnings to the tax office, your husband should have been paying class 2.

    You need to check this.

If your husband has been paying class 4 NI contributions as self employed then he will also have been paying class 2 which will entitle him to contribution based ESA. (not means tested)

He will need a fit note from the doctor to put in an application.

Google for how to apply. (sorry, can't post links at the moment)

Depending on your total household income and children (if any) there may be other benefits that you might be entitled to. E.g. Council tax benefit, housing costs and tax credits.

    Are you working? Any children?

Thank you all for your your advice.
We are not married, have no dependent children. and do not actually live together even though we have been in a relationship for 18 years!! Long story.
He lives alone and has a large mortgage on his home.
I will phone the benefits office tomorrow and see what they have to say.
    Thanks again

In that case if he has no savings then he will probably entitled to income based ESA top up. This will mean that he will be entitled to full council tax benefit and Support for Mortgage interest (the latter kicks in after 13weeks)

Has he got any Critical Illness cover (think that is what it is called)?

Often self employed people take it out and then forget that they have done so.

    Hope he gets better soon.
  • i fully understand where u are comming from, my husband is self employed builder and has just had a stroke a month ago and awaiting to hear if he can get a pay out on his critial illness policy as he will be off for about 6 months, hes got a income policy and that is going to pay out crap money.
Inside me lives a skinny woman crying to get out - but I can usually shut her up with cake!
