Disappointed with my Kindle Fire

I received a Kindle Fire for Christmas - I asked for a Kindle but I didn't realise that the Fire was a tablet rather than an e-reader and now I'm a bit stuffed! My parents didn't realise either and so when they presented the idea of the Fire to me, I okayed it without much research, which I'm kicking myself for now - I heard the word Kindle and assumed. Normally I research all my gadgets before hand!

Whilst I love the reading aspect of it, the battery life is pitiful for what I wanted (long train journeys, library sessions and coach journeys with no access to charging points) especially as I don't download apps onto it. The only one I have downloaded is GoodReads because it seemed to make sense but I could live without it. TBH, I got a Samsung Galaxy S2 this past November with my upgrade and I rarely use the apps even on that - I'm just not an app person, I like things plain and simple.

Having a look at the actual specs on Amazon, I have decided that a Paperwhite or regular Kindle would make far more sense for my usage, and would be more fitting to my needs.

However - I have been using the Kindle (only for a few hours really though) since Christmas Day. Is there any chance that I can return it now and get a refund or exchange? I'm guessing not but I thought I'd ask and see if anyone knew, rather than going in blind and starting to make plans for an e-reader. It was bought back in November :/

If I did get a Paperwhite or original Kindle (ignoring the probability of the above question being a no go) - would my downloads transfer onto that or would I have to re-download my books (including the ones I've paid for)?

  • How large is the capacity on your kindle fire? My friend sold her normal kindle on ebay for near enough the retail price for it. Lots of people like them and want them. I'm really surprised at the battery life on it though, are you sure your not just leaving something on that could be disconnected??

So the Kindle fire was bought in novmber, cant see a refund possible since its been used, you could ask the retailer but your parents would need to do that since they were the customer, or failing that sell it on ebay as Lottie says.

As for the last question, you just redownload what books you bought to the new device, dont have a kindle myself but have a nexus and was easy to download the books (to the nexus) I bought via my Galaxy S2.

Errr, tbh I dunno - it's the standard one? If they won't take it back I'll probably just accept it and live with it to be honest. Yep, it's standard at 9 hours maximum, I thought it was the same as the 'normal' Kindles which is somewhere around a month to 8 weeks depending on which one you get. It's because it's backlit and is constantly refreshing rather than an e-reader which only refreshes when you change the page. If I had known I would've just asked for the Kindle e-reader in the first place!

Apparently Amazon are extending their return period back to November the 1st so I may be able to return it, depending on how they feel about the condition of it (not a scratch on it, just a load of finger prints from swiping :o) Has anyone had any experience with returning *any* Kindle a week or so after they got it?

I have been browsing the customer comments on Amazon about Kindle Fire as I had been considering getting one. Among the less positive comments, at least a couple of customers have talked about returning their Kindle for a refund. You could contact their customer services to ask.

In that case why not contact them and ask, the worse they would say is no, not sure how amazon refunds work.

Especially if you would just accept a swap/exchange for a Kindle.

The Fire is a bit of a hotchpotch IMO. My daughter looked at it but we decided the Nexus was abetter bet which I firmly believe it is, right from the initial hold.

I have a kindle touch and as a reader with a few extras including wifi it is very good. With wifi switched off ,battery life is very good, even when paired with a dedicated lighted case that feeds from the kindle battery.

I asked in my email if I could exchange it (and get the difference back, because there's about £30 difference in price I think).

Quick question - can you download PDFs on your touch? The only bonus I've found of my Kindle Fire is that I can download my uni research papers onto it, which I can then sit and read in bed, but as I graduate in May and I'm planning to keep the reader for a good few years it's a bit of a short term bonus!
