HP DV6 laptop wont turn on

I have just been given a nice laptop from my wifes sister, it stopped working and instead of repairing it she brought a new one,

So Im going to try and get it working again.

Its a HP DV6 ,not to old and has a good spec.

She said it had a virus type thing and reset the factory setting on it, started to work after that for a short time then the screen would not come on ! every time it was started up and now it wont come on at all.

it starts to power up, fan starts and lights on kepboard come on, but blank screen !

Ive tried linking to tv via HDMI lead (no luck)
Taking battery out and in again
holding start button down
holding start and Esc down
pressing F11 on start

but no luck on any of these

ANY help will be great :D

  • F2 on start up should bring up system diagnostics where you can check for hardware failures,it does on my dv6 running windows 7.

Does anything come up on the screen at all (either some technical info on the machine, or a splash screen with the HP logo)?

If not, does it been in a particular pattern when it starts?
    - If it does Google the model name (full - there have been several DV6s over the years) and POST beep codes. The POST is the power-on self test, and the codes will indicate what failed.

If it doesn't beep, then it would indicate that everything is fine with the start-up of the computer and that the screen is dead. I'm not sure that the HDMI will work by default, but the VGA or DVI port should if there is one. If you can connect it to a PC monitor try that.

If it's going through the BIOS, then failing to start windows then it could be the Windows install that is corrupt - either the HDD is failing or something has broken the install. See if you can start it with the Windows CD in. Also try different f-keys to get into the BIOS - I've seen posts mentioning both F1 and F10 being the BIOS key (although some said F1 was just a diagnostics key). Other BIOSs use the DEL key on the numeric keypad, and F12 and F2 are also sometimes used. If you can get into the BIOS check that it's reporting the HDD & DVD drive, also check that the DVD is first on the boot order (if the HDD is broken, the Windows install disc will allow you to repair if it boots in preference to the HDD).

    Thanks,

    Thanks Mirno
its a HP Pavilion Entertainment dv6
    model dv6 - 1210sa

Thers is no bleeping when it starts up and screen is total blank at all times.
But one of the lights that are on, is the sound mute light. so thats might be why its not bleeping and I cant seem to get that to turn off.

    Fan is running

    start button light on

    Light above touchpad on

    mute light on

    wireless light on

    Volume - ////////////////////+ lights on

2 small lights flashing all the time at same time one next to Caps lock, and one just above end and pg up (r/h side above numeric keys)

HP logo lights up on Lid

    ...............................................................
Tried all buttons you said but nothing at all
but also did try to link up to a pc screen with the VGA port and again nothing.

tried taking battery out then putting power lead in and restarting, but just same results with same lights on soild or flashing at a constant speed.

Battery isnt great so has to be on power lead to stay on for more than 10 mins.

so could well be the screen, but not to sure about the flashing lights on kepboard might mean something, but looking at the online manual I cant see what there for!

  • The beeps should sound even if the sound is muted. From the sounds of it it seems to be working, just have a dead screen. Can you hear if the hard drive spins up? Can you turn caps lock on/off, there is usually a light to let you know it's on?

a lot of one brand of laptop available in recent years seem to suffer from overheating gpu/solder/power system/motherboard cracks/twists/defects - ie dead well before their time problems

hold down power button for 10 seconds, remove battery, hard disk, press all over the keyboard while switching on, if nothing comes on screen, and nothing comes on external screen, it's probably knackered. it may be fixable with a hot air gun or soldering iron if you want to spend time on it

Some newer laptops use the LEDs instead of beep codes, the website above gives the number of flashes and what they mean...
