Hello everyone, I hope no-one minds me posting to ask this, I'm trying to budget for January but our local garage isn't open until early Jan for me to check with them

I believe the middle and back section of my exhaust will need to be replaced (it was an advisory on my last MOT, and as of 2 days ago my car suddenly started sounding much more throaty!). I have a Vauxhall Astra, Y reg, 1.8 Sports. does anyone have a rough idea of what this might cost me so I know roughly what to expect ? I realise there will be slight differences between garages, but just a ball-park would be fab :)

Thanks in advance, and apologies if I've not given enough info - I'll try to answer any other questions that might be needed

And here's to keeping my fingers crossed that my exhaust will stay intact at least until the garage opens!

The long middle section on my Vectra was recently replaced for £200 inc labour. Might be cheaper if you shop around.

Thanks ElkyElky :) It sounds like mine will come to more than that as I need the back box replacing too...?

Pop your reg in to http://www.unipartautomotive.co.uk/ and check their prices for the middle and rear section of the exhaust to give you an idea on how much the parts themselves cost. My garage uses Unipart for their supplies.

Labour can be anywhere between 30-80 an hour based on my own experiences, best to phone around. Shouldn't take longer than an hour to replace.

My exhaust was blown in the middle for months until a stop from the police forced me to have it sorted. You could buy the parts from eBay and take them to the garage if itll work out cheaper - I did this with my last car.

*Edit.. Just looked on Unipart and could have sworn they had an exhaust section but can't see it?

OOhh thanks ElkyElky, that was really helpful! I'll pop my reg number in there now - I knew I could google for parts but had no idea what specifics my car would need (I know different engines etc in the same year of a model can differ) - putting my reg number in somewhere takes the guess work out for me :D

Good to know too that it *should* only be a max of 1 hour and max cost around £80. I know things might not work out exactly like that when the job is started, but it's good to know a starting point at the very least. Also very good to be able to get an idea of parts costs to keep a rough track of the quote too - thank you!

HHmm, no I can't see exhausts either but that's still a really handy link, thanks. I can still google elsewhere for the exhaust too for a rough idea. Thanks loads for the idea of the labour time!

I think I just needed a starting point... Off the back of the Uni Part suggestion, http://www.eurocarparts.com/exhaust-parts have exhausts and take the number plate to tell me the specifics I need for my car which is great :)

I had the middle and back section of the exhaust changed on a 206 about 3 years ago, IIRC it was somewhere in the £200 to £250 range at the small local independent (London prices!) Would dig out the invoice to check but I sold that car a few months ago and so the paperwork went with it

Fast fit places can be fairly cheap for a full exhaust. But its likely to be cheaply made and not last much longer than the warranty.

Saves laying under the car in the cold though.

Yea, I wouldn't have a clue under the car, cold or warm (I'm a gardening / lottie gal so the cold an wet doesn't worry me) so an hours labour to me is essential and would defiantely save a bodge job and much frustration on my part - this would definately be best left to the experts where I'm involved, lol...

(says the girl who bought herself a Mini too, and is stubborn enough to decide she'll learn the mechanics of a car as she goes along - hahahahahaaa.... hmmm)

    :)
