Can you balance transfer from AMEX charge card?

Hello,

I've signed up for an AMEX Gold charge card to take advantage of the 20k Avios points if you spend over £2000 in the first 3 months. I've got a holiday payment that isn't due til the summer but was wondering if anyone has had experience of transfering a balance from an AMEX charge card to another credit card, as if so I'll pay the holiday on the AMEX card and then transfer the balance to another 0% credit card to pay off over the coming months, assuming I'd still get the Avios points?

Yes, I did exactly the same as you about 6 months ago - provided they haven't changed the rules for the AMEX gold card since then, then you should be ok! :)

    Lovely, thanks!
  • Sadly I've just looked at transfering a balance from the Amex Gold Charge card to my Barclaycard and the Barlcaycard website is saying it's not a supported card to balance transfer from. Does anyone know of a 0% deal card that you can transfer a balance to from an Amex charge card?

The supported thing is probably because the site is expecting a 16 digit card number. Try calling them instead?

I've had it before with the Gold Card - other credit cards cannot transfer from it. So I've ended up either asking for a balance transfer to my bank account (for the few that allow it) or using a 'mule' card - e.g. Tesco Bank card that will allow you to money transfer to your bank account (and you use these funds to pay off the AmEx) and then balance transfer from Tesco to your 0% card.

Other cards might offer the 'mule' functionality but since Egg went I'm only left with Tesco that allow it (with no fee etc.).

Thanks will look at this as an option.

@ reclusive46, thanks, I've rung them but they confirmed that they don't balance transfer from Charge cards.

I made two balance transfers from my Amex Gold to my Tesco 0% BT card in October and November last year. Did them on Tesco's online banking website with no probs
