Wrong Gas Meter Serial Number
Options
I got the keys to my new flat last week and want to set up a gas and electricity account with British Gas.
I phoned them to sort it out and they told me to go and check the serial numbers on the meters to make sure they switched the right supplies. The electricity meter matches what they have in the database, but the gas does not.
The supplier the previous tenants used is EDF. BG suggested I phone them to get them to update the database. Is this all I need to do? Should I be asking anything else? This is my first property so i'm really a little clueless. I don't want to wait on hold for an hour and then find out I have to call back later to ask more questions!
They also got me to do a burn test to check the meter was mine, and that is definitely the case.

Also check that they are billing you for correct type of meter, metric or imperial. There could have been a meter exchange which the supplier has nt been informed of0

Good luck with this one and BG, I had a similar issue a few years ago which took 18 months to sort out and several hours of frustrating phone calls.
The best one was when the woman asked me to tell her the serial number - only for her to tell me I was wrong, as that was not the number on the computer, could she understand that it was her computer that was wrong.
We even got to the point of them telling me they had special meter readers who had checked it despite the fact the would have needed wings to get to my meter!0 -
Whoops - If EDF were supplying the previous tenant, you are automatically on a deemed contract with them - You must register your occupation with them and give them the meter readings showing on the date you moved in
Only when you have done this, are you free to change to BG or any other supplier0 -
As above, you cannot switch until you have an account with the existing supplier. Any attempt to switch direct to BG will be blocked by EDFNo free lunch, and no free laptop0

you can switch , although if the details of msn are wrong your creating a rod for your own backDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0
