Windows 7 64 bit Service Pack

My laptop is 3 years old but came with 3 years of McAfee installed. This has just run out and I have bought a McAfee Total Protection 2013 CD. However, tried all afternoon to install it but unsuccessful so did an online chat with McAfee who said I didn't have a Servce Pack installed for Windows 7 and that was causing the problem.
I went online and found a Free download of a SP for Windows 7 but after an hour trying to install it I have been told via an error message that I cannot install a 32 bit SP when I am running 64 bit Windows 7.
Does anyone know if there is a free download of a SP Windows 7 64 bit or will I have to buy it?
Would it be best to just install AVG for now? Any help would be much appreciated. Really tired of the whole thing.

Have you tried using the Windows update manager instead of a website? Type on your start menu search bar "windows update" and try that
I personally don't use McAfee, but I would imagine its still usable, it's just you won't get any new definition updates0 -

this is the SP you need. You don't pay for MS updates....more to the point, how come you haven't already updated to SP1 and beyond - it came out almost 2 years ago....I'd check your windows update settings, set to notify you but only download & install when you tell it to.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

I'm actually surprised that the support agent at McAffee couldn't give you the link - it should have been in the knowledge base software that they all follow... basics for any support team.0

Thanks for all your help you are brilliant. My daughter mainly uses this laptop and I dont think she has given permission for updates! Of course she never mentioned the anti virus was running out ......
McAfee were not helpful they wanted to transfer me to another team that would help me solve my problem after I paid a fee for their help.
I'll try the download suggested and turn on automatic updates.
Thanks again!0 -
Sorry GunJack I'm being dim I know but I've clicked on your link and it says 'The links in this section correspond to files available for this download. Download the files appropriate for you.' How do I know which file is appropriate or do I download them all??0

Don't install McAfee anyway. Use Avast, Avira or MSE-all free and better. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
