Windows 7 64 bit Service Pack

My laptop is 3 years old but came with 3 years of McAfee installed. This has just run out and I have bought a McAfee Total Protection 2013 CD. However, tried all afternoon to install it but unsuccessful so did an online chat with McAfee who said I didn't have a Servce Pack installed for Windows 7 and that was causing the problem.

I went online and found a Free download of a SP for Windows 7 but after an hour trying to install it I have been told via an error message that I cannot install a 32 bit SP when I am running 64 bit Windows 7.

Does anyone know if there is a free download of a SP Windows 7 64 bit or will I have to buy it?

Would it be best to just install AVG for now? Any help would be much appreciated. Really tired of the whole thing.
