Not sure whether this is the right place for this so please feel free to move... I run a small business and out of the blue yesterday afternoon I recieved a call from a Domain registration / web hosting company letting me know that another company in my line of business had tried to register the .net, .biz and .info…

That is extortionate. You are already covered legally anyway if anyone tries to pretend to be you, and also complaining to Nominet if that happened would have their domain names stripped from them and probably automatically given to you. There's lots of people that'd probably want those particular names legitimately without even knowing of your business' existence and so it's unlikely they'd try and pretend to be you.
