I know you have to fill out the forms and send to the DVLA straight away, but what happens if I recieve speeding fines or tickets after the sale? How do I prove when it was sold/ I wasn't driving at the time?

You fill out the back of the main page of the V5C (logbook) and both you and the new owner sign and date it. You fill out the smaller tear-off green slip and give that to the new owner. Send the main bit to the DVLA at the address on the form (photocopy it beforehand if you're for extra peace of mind).

Any traffic offences committed after that are down to the new owner.

If you get the owner to sign and date (and time) the declaration you have additional proof of when it was sold.
  • Check for the roller marks on the cash notes. It is the only way to be certain they are genuine.

Another important thing to mention, dont let any prospective buyer drive the car unless they have full insurance cover, 3rd party only could see you out of pocket. When you sell the car make sure you get a copy of a signed dated reciept with the exact time on it, this could help you if the new owner commits ant offences on their way home.

    Watch for....

I will give you £10,000 if you ship it for me. Pay the shipping costs and keep the change. I am religious and honest you can trust me.

The car is for my brothers husbands 2nd aunts dog and its a present. I will pay by papal secure, or yahoo finance or ripyouoff where i pay them and when i get the car they pay you.

Or people who come and test drive it and then vanish with the keys and the car.

So many scams, You wont notice until its too late.
you mean watch out for "pay me by escrow"

And probably a 1001 other bogus payment websites/methods.

Yes if someone else drives your car they are only covered 3rd party at best. So any damage they do to your car is not covered if the accident is their fault.

Ask your insurance if they will cover potential buyers.

  • Ensure you do a receipt on purchase including:
    - the date/time sold
    - amount sold for
    - "sold as seen"
    - your signature
    - buyer's signature

And issues post sale are the buyer's problem. Caveat emptor and all that.
  • Thanks a lot guys :)
