Well TPFT was £30 cheaper and for a scrape, I did not want to loose a good old car and pay extra for the privilege of having the car scrapped for something minor due to book value.

If something went wrong with £500 excess and then the insurance valuation, I would get nothing back, so was not going to claim. It was really just insurance for the other party really.

Anyway a bit of a mute point as the car I was going to buy had a duff spare tyre (£110), but more importantly about 5 or more lights on the dash did not come on when the ignition key was turned, and it had another electrical problem too, so ran away. Took 4 weeks to find this one! :(

Also bear in mind TPFT is normally more expensive than fully comp.

Is this actually the case? If so why?

The reason is that most people who might take out TPFT cover have low value cars and if they had comprehensive cover, the insurer would not have to pay out much anyway after taking off the policy excess, writing off the car and cancelling the inurance (yes some companies e.g. Admiral cancel your insurance and keep/demand payment of all the premium in the case of a total loss). So the main risk in either case is what they might have to pay for you damaging someone else and/or their property.
The other reason is that there is more competition for comprehensive policies which drives the cost down.
If you have a low value car, the only benefit of comprehensive insurance is that windscreen cover is included but if TPFT is the same price or dearer then you might as well get comprehensive.

They assume you have a cheap virtually clapped out banger, Possibly with more dents that the average car thats just fallen out of the crusher.

So you will obviously drive it like you dont care. Dodgems on the roads.

Statistics say this. I presume thats their answer anyway. Its dearer because they want it to be.

The last couple of times i've taken out insurance on a personal car then the last time I took out a business policy i've never found fully comp cheaper than TPF&T

TPFT can be a very similar price, often only £10 in it which if you consider that you don't get windscreen cover as standard with TPFT, then the TPFT is actually dearer if you then buy additional windscreen cover.
