what about asking your Local Authority for info on care in the community jobs, shopping, housework personal care kind of things, or check on their website for local jobs.

A lot of the old jobs have moved to places like China. The UK is aiming for a knowledge-based economy. Some jobs can't be moved abroad and so will remain: those where you deal face-to-face with the public, in the service industry.
