You can't miss me walking down the street - I have some rather fetching crutches and cannot walk faster than a snail's pace.

I know you can't miss me because I have heard the comments:

"Mommy, why does that lady walk so slow?" Cute little girl, maybe aged around 4 :)

"Look at her, it will take her all day to get to the end of the road." Not so cute group of teenagers :o

"Hurry up across the *expletive* road, the lights have already changed." No where near cute driver of car waiting to go through lights

So, what has that got to do with super powers?

You're confused now, right?

Well, it's like this. I struggle with walking, so much so I more often than not have to use my wheelchair and that, ladies and gentlemen, is when I have this amazing power to become invisible :j:j:j:j

Waiting in shop queue, someone stands behind me and starts talking to cashier, in order to be served. I point out I'm waiting and cashier says "I'm already serving this person now."

I'm in the queue, leaving a small gap so that the person in front doesn't connect with me and a person walks in front of me to join the queue. It was obvious I was also in line - at least they had the sense to apologise.

Again, this time at the local markets, waiting to be served, someone walks right up and picks up their bunch of grapes but does apologise when I say I'm in line.

The bus drives straight past me. it wasn't full, they chose not to stop. I did receive an apology from the bus company.

People talk to whoever I'm with, rather than me - not always but enough to notice.

One time, when I was using the scooter, which is not a small item, and was in a lift, a couple got in and forced the pushchair in the lift, actually catching the skin on my finger, it was that tight. Getting out again was no mean feat  It was the toddler I felt sorry for. Why they couldn't have just waited for one of the other two lifts next to the one I occupied, I don't know.

I'm sure there are more examples, I just can't think of any right now. Perhaps I'm not the only one with super powers though, so feel free to share :)

I have to say, as much as I love my super powers, maybe I need to purchase a rather loud horn so - and this is the MSE bit, any suggestions? :rotfl::rotfl::D

Totally understand where you are coming from here (whole right leg and much pelvis amputee).

However, I tackle the issue differently. I'm pretty quiet and say nothing to anybody but if anybody wishes to put me down whilst I am out (be that schoolkids or adults) I will make my feelings known. I don't use my wheelchair to get into positions or spaces I shouldn't and I expect the same courtesy of others. If they try to abuse my willingness to drop a few places in a queue and suchlike, they can expect me to protest! Kids, adults, no difference to me, I treat everyone as equals and expect to be treated as such.....
  • I was in a wheelchair once for a few days, it's scary, you feel like things are going to fall on you, all that apart from what you have just described

I'm quite quiet, Parva. I don't always challenge people and find it difficult at times.

I didn't mind the little girl. I didn't hear her mum's response but would hope it was handled sensitively.

The motorist made me cry. He was so rude. Did he not think, if I could have crossed the road any quicker, I would have done? :(

Shops are a nightmare trying to get round them. They are not disabled friendly.

Before christmas, our local poundland was like tackling an assault course, especially as you got nearer the till. It was not pleasant.

I would like to see shops more disabled friendly but they are of the view that they need to use as much available floor space as possible.

HMV was the same, however, the lovely young girl took my things, bagged them and bought them back to me. Superdrug staff were excellent, Game insisted I tackle the assault course to reach the tills.

Some are very helpful, others not so :o

Couldn't agree more. This is why I did all of my Xmas shopping online. :) Had to wait around all day for the deliveries mind (grumble grumble) but it was far better than the other option. :)
