Free Windows 7 download?

Hi, Hope someone can help.

I currently have Vista on two home computers, both about five years old. I am thinking of upgrading to Windows 7, as I have been told this improves performance and speed of the computers. I assumed that I would have to pay for this, but a search of the internet shows several sites offering free downloads of Windows 7. Are these legal? How do I choose the best one - I assume that the actual operating system is the same, but are some downloads more 'complete' than others? How do I choose a reliable site to download from, assuming it is legal?

Any help appreciated :)

Your assumption is correct. It isn't free.

Were there lots of free movies and MP3s on the same site?

Of course there is plenty of "free" versions out there, are they legal? the answer is no. If you want to upgrade buy it through amazon etc although it wont be cheap. You looked at windows 8 The £25 upgrade free is a good price for an os. This is of course if your not put off with everyone saying how bad windows 8 is :D

backup, followed by a reinstall from factory restore partition would probably cure speed issues.

  • There is the legitimate site called Digital River which is Microsoft's delivery partner and they allow genuine Windows 7 installation ISO's for download - however of course it requires a suitable software licence (product key) to use with it, which you can't get for free.

It's a useful site for those that need to reinstall Win7 with SP1

We have done this today, on Dell's advice, as there doesn't seem to be a graphics card. They tell me it is there, but must be corrupted as my son cannot load any type of game onto the computer. They also recommended the Windows 7 upgrade, as have friends. I'm not too bothered about upgrading the operating system though if the speed improves, so thank you for this information.

if there were no graphics card, the screen would be blank

    what is the problem

  • We kept gettting a small window saying the graphics card wasn't connected. It still appeared after the factory restore, but my son decided to install his new flight simulator anyway - that's what started it all off. He hasn't installed any games before, he's only played online. He flies remote control helicopters every week, and has just bought a flight simulator to practise his control of different models, including planes, prior to deciding which his next model will be. Crashing them can be very expensive :(, and the simulator uses the same remote control as his current heli.

Anyway, he has installed the simulator, despite the message box, and it is working :D. I have a very happy 13 year old.

Thank you for your help - much appreciated :)
