Hi,

To my knowledge new drivers for the first 2 years have to accumulate 6 points before the licence may be revoked , and then after the 2 years have up to 12 points

my question is if the driver get 3points within the first 2 years he still be entitled to have more 6 points added to limit or its only when you finish the first 2 years clean ??

excuse my english and hope that my question is clear

thank you

You will continue accumulating points in the same way as before. Only difference being this special condition will be placed for 2 years only.

thank u arcon5 for ur replay

that means when the first 2 years finish with 3 penality points the licence may be revoked after accumulating 9 points or 12 points ???

    Im a bit confused sorry
  • Within the first 2 years, 6 points will get your licence revoked, i.e. your licence is null and void and you need to retake both driving tests.

After the first 2 years, accumulating 12 points will put you in line for a 6 month totting up ban. You would not have to retake driving tests. Points are only "active" for 3 years.

If you have 3 points at the end of two years, then the overall total goes up to 12 points before you will be disqualified under the penalty points rules - so you can get another 9 points.

Bear in mind that the total is calculated over a rolling period, so the earliest points may expire not long afterwards.

As above, if you accumulate 3 points in the first 2 years, you will need to accumulate 9 more points before you get disqualified if youv been driving over 2 years.

Also, the typical speeding code (sp30) will be removed from your license in 4 years. To do this you will need to pay a £20 fee.

Also, if you are driving in excess of the speed limit, but within a certain percentage (I think 10%), you may be offered a driving course and fine instead of a points and a fine.

If driving is absolutely necessary for you, you may be able to keep your license even after accumulating 12 points, however expect to pay a hefty fine!

I think the posts above are wrong.

The rule of "any offence which leads to 6 points=revocation" only applies for 2 years after passing the test.

Revocation is completely different to disqualification.
Revocation is automatic and means you are back to being a learner driver and have to re-take both parts of the test.
Disqualification can only occur at court and only applies for a certain period, after which you will automatically be entitled to apply for your licence back.

Any points on the licence before passing the test remain for the usual period.

So if you have points on your licence at the time of passing the test, any new points added within 2 years will lead to automatic revocation if the new points total is 6 points or more

The text here https://www.gov.uk/penalty-points-endorsements/new-drivers explains it. The section in the blue box is a bit misleading IMO, because it doesn't make clear that existing points count, although it is explained a bit further down.
