In reality how good are these USB adapters compared to say a PC card for either a laptop or PCI card for a desktop?"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Mahatma Gandhi0 -
They're not as good, they use a little more CPU power, and can be slower.
They're handy for some people, because they work on both PCs and laptops, and there's no need to open a PC to install it.0 -

Sorry Charlie, when someone says USB adapter I think of an item that plugs into one USB port and gives you four more USB ports, my mistake...Thanks to all who post constructively.

Wonder if someone can help me,
i've just bought a laptop with wireless capability and i want to connect to the internet using it, however i dont want to set up a network using it as I only have the one computer (my desktop was v old and got binned a few weeks ago). Can i connect the router directly to the cable modem without the need to run this through another computer system meaning i can get internet access anywhere in my house without the need for wires?
if this is possible what equipment would i need to get - does it need to be a special router?0 -

The £35 Belkin router will work fine for your laptop along with your cable modem.
Which cable company do you use ? You may need to call them to register the MAC address of the router with them once you have received it.
Thanks
