No FSCS protection on any offshore account. Is there any other useful protection?

Yes, there is a scheme similar to the UK scheme
Lloyds TSB Bank (Gibraltar) Limited

Please note that, in relation to banking services which we provide, you might not be eligible for compensation under a deposit protection guarantee scheme available in your country of residence. If in doubt, contact your local banking regulator, visit their website or seek independent advice.

Do you have a British passport? If so you won't be severing all your links with the UK.

A number of UK banks will allow UK residents to retain their account when they move overseas. The address you give them doesn't have to be here.

Unless your wanting to disappear off the grid, would it not be reasonable to leave some funds in a bank with lower/free overseas access like Metrobank or Norwich & Peterborough?

Have you checked out expat forums for ideas, strummerjoe? There are scores of them about, and your best chances for finding a brilliant solution are probably on one of those forums.
• It's no real problem opening or keeping a UK bank account using an overseas address, but you do need that address and some sort of proof that it exists (utility bill, statement from some other bank or government department).

The problem in this instance seems to be that the OP wont have any sort of permanent address and he is likely to have huge trouble opening or retaining any sort of UK bank account in this situation. This applies equally to offshore accounts in the CI or IOM. The banks there just will not open or maintain an account without an address. I think that Switzerland wont do it any more either.
"Dodgy" banks in weird and wonderful offshore places in the Caribbean may be more helpful, but they probably wont be very interested for just 60K.

It's hard to imagine anyone who has no family and no friends at all, and who is about to put his net worth in a travel bag and leave behind job, income, pension etc.. "Mid-life crisis" sounds about right. Good luck.
