Problem With Ford Focus

Hi. I wonder if anyone can help? I have a focus estate that every so often gets a bit carried away with the accelleration. The problem being that you don't even have to have your foot on the accellorator pedal for it to happen. In fact, it often happens when you are slowing down for a junction. The car lunges forward. I have taken it into 2 garages and had diagnostics done at both but nothing has shown up. I have tried talking to some ford dealers and they have no idea what can be causing it and that i will need to have yet another diagnostic before they can even look at it. As this will cost £90 and i have had 2 already, i can see no justification in having yet another.
I am hoping ( dreaming!) that someone out there is a mechanic and has dealt with this problem in the past and can tell me what it is and what has to be done to rectify it before I have an accident!

go to 'car by car breakdown' and input your model and see if there
are any known problems with your model.

I had a similar problem with my car (not a Focus). The throttle cable was sticking. As a result, when lifting off the accelerator, the cable wouldnt release immediately preventing the car from slowing. Chances are it will be a new throttle cable, or if you're lucky, lubricating the pedal might sort it out.

Thanks Balsingh but it does not have an accellorator cable. It works using an electronic foot pedal. Thats the problem with these computerised cars!

I had a similar problem with my Impreza when the idle air control valve had been damaged by water. That and the throttle position sensor had to be replaced.
  • Ihave same problem with my ford focus estate if you have found out problem please let me know as it driving me mad
  • We had the same trouble with a 307 and it turned out that the pedal was slighty catching on the car mat in the foot well. We had to make sure that every time we got in that the mat was pulled right back into the correct place.

i wish i could help fordmad. never did find the answer and we sold it a few weeks ago. i was told on a ford forum that it was to stop the car from cutting out in low revs, but it was never proven that was the reason. just bought a picasso ( wish we had kept the focus) and that does it a little too, but not as much. just remember to leave a bigger gap than usual between you and the car in front. good luck
